Mattson, also known as Earnest, is an unincorporated community located near U.S. Route 49 in Coahoma County, Mississippi, United States.

Mattson is 8 miles (13 km) south of Clarksdale and 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Dublin.

History

Mattson is named after a local family that owned a large sawmill in the area. [2] Mattson is located at a junction of the former Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. [3] A post office operated under the name Earnest from 1887 to 1897 and first began operation under the name Mattson in 1897. [4] A drug store operated by T. R. Montgomery formerly operated in Mattson. [5]

In 1944 The Hopson Planting Company used International Harvester cotton pickers to harvest cotton, becoming the first farm to mechanically cultivate and produce an entire cotton crop. The former Hopson Plantation Company Store is now operated as a restaurant and music venue.

The Bolivar County section, designated in 2000, travels from Merigold to Mound Bayou and Shelby. In Coahoma County, MS 161 was designated in 2004 and runs through Clarksdale and Lyon. In Desoto County, MS 161 travels through the town of Walls and was created in 1999.

The New Alcazar Hotel, also known as Alcazar Hotel, is a historic building in Clarksdale, Mississippi, United States. Once considered one of the premier hotels in the South, its guests included the playwright Tennessee Williams. Located in the hotel were a restaurant and several other businesses, including WROX radio station, which broadcast from the hotel for 40 years.
