At the end of each season since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized the top high school basketball players in the United States with MaxPreps National Player of the Year honors going to the top male and female performers. In addition to the overall players of the year, the website recognizes top players from each class by naming a MaxPreps National Junior of the Year, Sophomore of the Year, and Freshman of the Year. The awards are typically announced in early April.
Many of the players recognized have gone on to standout college and NBA careers, including LaMelo Ball, Lonzo Ball, Paolo Banchero, Kevin Love, Michael Porter Jr., Austin Rivers, Ben Simmons, Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson.
WNBA stars Skylar Diggins, Sabrina Ionescu, Maya Moore, Chiney Ogwumike, Nneka Ogwumike, Breanna Stewart and A'ja Wilson are among the female selections.

Niccolò "Nico" Mannion is an Italian-American professional basketball for Pallacanestro Varese of the Lega Basket Serie A (LBA). He played college basketball for the Arizona Wildcats. He attended Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top point guards in the 2019 class. Although he mainly grew up in the United States, Mannion represents his birth country of Italy in international competitions.
Cole Hinton Anthony is an American professional basketball player for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Listed at 6 feet 2 inches and 185 pounds, he plays the point guard position.
Jalen Romande Green is an American professional basketball player for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a consensus five-star recruit and the best shooting guard in the 2020 class, with ESPN ranking him number one overall. He finished his high school career at Prolific Prep in Napa, California, and he chose to forgo college basketball to join the NBA G League Ignite team in its inaugural season. Green has won three gold medals with the United States at the junior level and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup. Green was selected by the Houston Rockets with the second overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He is the third player in the NBA of Filipino descent, following Raymond Townsend and Jordan Clarkson.
Isaiah Stewart II is an American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Washington Huskies. Listed at 6 feet 8 inches (2.03 m) and 250 pounds (113 kg), he plays the center and power forward positions.
Precious Ezinna Achiuwa is a Nigerian professional basketball player for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He attended high school in the United States, where he was a consensus five-star recruit and named a McDonald's All-American. Achiuwa played college basketball for the Memphis Tigers, earning conference player of the year honors as a freshman in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2020. He was selected by the Miami Heat in the first round of the 2020 NBA draft with the 20th overall pick. After his rookie year ended in Miami, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors during the 2021 offseason.
RoderickDeon "R. J." Hampton Jr. is an American professional basketball player for the Capital City Go-Go of the NBA G League. He played for the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League (NBL) before applying for the NBA draft. He was a five-star recruit at Little Elm High School in Little Elm, Texas. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 24th overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft.
Emoni James-Wayne Bates is an American professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), on a two-way contract with the Cleveland Charge of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the Memphis Tigers and the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

Banchero was named the Rookie of the Year of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2022. Following his freshman season, he declared for the 2022 NBA draft, where he was selected with the first overall pick by the Orlando Magic. Banchero was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2023.
