McMaster Innovation Park (MIP) is an innovation and research facility located approximately two kilometres east of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. McMaster Innovation Park focuses on supporting startups, business, research through providing property management services as well as business aid. Entrepreneurs, firms, researchers, industry partners, business mentors and support facilities are the main customers of the firm. MIP currently houses five buildings: the Atrium@MIP, CanmetMATERIALS, McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC), Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (BEAM) project centre and envisions 10 buildings on site within 10 years with 1,500–1,800 people working full-time.[ citation needed ]
In early 2005, McMaster University announced its plans to build a research park on property previously used by an appliance manufacturing company. Later in year, the Province of Ontario allocated $10 million in funding to the project and MIP was well into the development stages. [1] Also in 2005, the Federal Government announced that it would be moving the CanmetMATERIALS Technology Laboratory to MIP, [2] making the park a focal point for innovation in technology for the entire country. In October 2009, The Atrium@MIP had its grand opening, meaning the park itself was officially open. By February 2011, the CanmetMATERIALS Building was complete, and the federal government had moved from Ottawa into MIP. Construction of the MARC Building had begun in 2011, and it was completed in fall of 2013. Tenants moved in and started working on their state-of-the-art automotive technology research.
The Atrium@MIP houses over 114 tenants ranging from start-up companies and accelerators to research labs. It was the first completed multi-tenant building at McMaster Innovation Park.
The Atrium@MIP multi-tenant building is the only remaining office building that was part of Camco's Manufacturing plant, which operated in Hamilton for almost 100 years. MIP has now transformed what once was the site of Westinghouse/Camco Warehouse and Manufacturing plants into a research park. MIP houses several displays showing historical retrospectives of the site and of Westinghouse's activity in Hamilton. The demolition and site reclamation began 2005 and was completed in 2009.
The CanmetMATERIALS research centre is dedicated to metals and materials fabrication, processing and evaluation.
CanmetMATERIALS is part of the Department of Natural Resources Canada and relocated from Ottawa to McMaster Innovation Park in 2011 to strategically locate itself at the center of the Canadian manufacturing sector. This building of 167,000 square feet located at 183 Longwood Rd. South houses over 100 staff who undertake over 100 collaborative research and development projects per year with industry, academia and other government departments. [3]
The McMaster Automotive Resource Centre is one of Canada’s leading research facilities in electric and hybrid vehicles.[ citation needed ]
The MARC building was developed in 2013 within an existing building at 200 Longwood Rd. South. The $26-million facility occupies approximately 90,000 square feet on two floors and is one of very few in the world located in an academic setting allowing both private and public sectors to work together to develop, design, and test hybrid technology. The redeveloped space includes commercial garage space with multiple bays ready to receive cars for experiments and testing.
McMaster University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell therapy and Immunology are collaborating at McMaster Innovation Park to develop a project centre focused on the fast emerging cell therapies industry. This investment will help create jobs, attract top talent to the region and keep Ontario at the forefront of scientific discovery. This project centre, the Centre for Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (BEAM), will develop innovative technologies to automate production for cell therapies, significantly lowering the cost to treat degenerative diseases like cancer. The Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI, located in Leipzig, Germany, has the objective to find solutions to specific problems at the interfaces between medicine, life sciences and engineering for partners active in medicine-related industries and businesses. The Institute works closely with hospital institutions, performing quality tests and clinical studies in cooperation with its many partners.
The Emerging Technology Centre (ETC) is a project at development at McMaster Innovation Park. The ETC will have: 40,000 square feet of lab space, 5,000 square feet of lab incubator space and an atrium area. The building focuses on the research and emerging technology.
Metrolinx plans to build an Operations, Maintenance, and Storage facility (OMSF) for the proposed Hamilton LRT which will run nearby. [4] [5] [6]
The Fraunhofer Society is a German research organization with 76 institutes spread throughout Germany, each focusing on different fields of applied science. With some 30,800 employees, mainly scientists and engineers, and with an annual research budget of about €3.0 billion, it is the biggest organization for applied research and development services in Europe. It is named after Joseph von Fraunhofer who, as a scientist, an engineer, and an entrepreneur, is said to have superbly exemplified the goals of the society.
The Golden Horseshoe is a secondary region of Southern Ontario, Canada, which lies at the western end of Lake Ontario, with outer boundaries stretching south to Lake Erie and north to Lake Scugog, Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay of Lake Huron. The region is the most densely populated and industrialized in Canada. The Technische Universität Darmstadt, commonly known as TU Darmstadt, is a research university in the city of Darmstadt, Germany. It was founded in 1877 and received the right to award doctorates in 1899. In 1882, it was the first university in the world to set up a chair in electrical engineering. In 1883, the university founded the first faculty of electrical engineering and introduced the world's first degree course in electrical engineering. In 2004, it became the first German university to be declared as an autonomous university. TU Darmstadt has assumed a pioneering role in Germany. Computer science, electrical engineering, artificial intelligence, mechatronics, business informatics, political science and many more courses were introduced as scientific disciplines in Germany by Darmstadt faculty.
The McMaster Faculty of Engineering is a faculty located at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. The faculty was established in 1958 and was the first engineering program to developed problem-based learning curriculum. It currently has seven departments in chemical engineering, civil engineering, computing and software, electrical and computer engineering, engineering physics, material science and engineering and mechanical engineering. The faculty offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees.
Innovation Place is the registered business name of the Saskatchewan Opportunities Corporation (SOCO), a crown corporation in Saskatchewan. SOCO operates two research parks: one located near the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and the second near the University of Regina in Regina, Saskatchewan. In 2018, approximately 140 companies were based at Innovation Place. Research parks such as Innovation Place are sometimes referred to as science parks or technology parks.
WMG, University of Warwick is a UK-based research and education group combining collaborative research and development with education programmes working in applied science, technology and engineering. An academic department of the University of Warwick and a centre of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, WMG was founded by Kumar Bhattacharyya in 1980 to help reinvigorate UK manufacturing and improve competitiveness through innovation and skills development.
Innovation Quarter in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, formerly Wake Forest Innovation Quarter, is an innovation district focused on research, business, and education in biomedical science, information technology, digital media, clinical services, and advanced materials. The Innovation Quarter, operated by Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, is home to academic groups, private companies and other organizations located on 330 acres in downtown Winston-Salem. Its tenants include departments from five academic institutions—Wake Forest School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, Forsyth Technical Community College, Winston-Salem State University, UNC School of the Arts— as well as private businesses and other organizations. One tenant is the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM), which is working to engineer more than 30 different replacement tissues and organs and to develop healing cell therapies. The science and research conducted at WFIRM is behind two start-up companies at Innovation Quarter. The ability of researchers and scientists to work alongside entrepreneurs furthers a goal of Innovation Quarter to develop new treatments and cures for disease and advances in technology.
The Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) is a 150-acre (61 ha) manufacturing technology park in Waverley, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It was partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund, with Yorkshire Forward, and developed by Harworth Group, previously the property development arm of UK Coal, on reclaimed opencast coal mine land close to the site of the battle of Orgreave.
MaRS Discovery District is a not-for-profit corporation founded in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 2000. Its stated goal is to commercialize publicly funded medical research and other technologies with the help of local private enterprises and as such is a public-private partnership. As part of its mission MaRS says, "MaRS helps create successful global businesses from Canada's science, technology and social innovation." As of 2014, startup companies emerging from MaRS had created more than 4,000 jobs, and in the period of 2011 to 2014 had raised over $750 million in capital investments.

Aberdeen Avenue is a Lower City minor arterial road in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It starts off just west of Longwood Road South and east of Highway 403 as a two-way thoroughfare up to Queen Street South, where it then switches over to a one-way collector road (eastbound) to Bay Street South and then to another two-way section from Bay Street to James Mountain Road, a mountain-access road in the city near the base of the Niagara Escarpment (mountain).

The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2, previously Cal(IT)2), also referred to as the Qualcomm Institute (QI) at its San Diego branch, is a $400 million academic research institution jointly run by the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) and the University of California, Irvine (UCI); in January 2022, plans were announced to add University of California, Riverside to the consortium. Calit2 was established in 2000 as one of the four UC Gray Davis Institutes for Science and Innovation. As a multidisciplinary research institution, it is conducting research discovering new ways in which emerging technologies can improve the state's economy and citizens' quality of life. Keeping in mind its goal of addressing large-scale societal issues, Calit2 extends beyond education and research by also focusing on the development and deployment of prototype infrastructure for testing new solutions in real-world environments. Calit2 also provides an academic research environment in which students can work alongside industry professionals to take part in conducting research and prototyping and testing new technologies.
The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology is a Swiss research institution for application-oriented materials science and technology. It has three locations – Dübendorf, St. Gallen and Thun. As part of the ETH Domain, it is assigned to the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER). For more than 100 years since its foundation in 1880, Empa has been a material testing institute. Since the late 1980s, it has increasingly transformed into an interdisciplinary research institute for materials and technologies.
The Fraunhofer Competence Field Additive Manufacturing integrates eighteen Fraunhofer institutes across Germany, which depending on their main focus, deal with subjects concerning additive manufacturing and represent the entire process chain. This includes the development, application and implementation of additive production processes as well as associated materials. Topics may cover all aspects of additive manufacturing, such as: materials and technologies, assessing and improving the quality of 3D printed parts, optimizing parts for various criteria and digital workflow.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE is an institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Located in Freiburg, Germany, The Institute performs applied scientific and engineering research and development for all areas of solar energy. Fraunhofer ISE has three external branches in Germany which carry out work on solar cell and semiconductor material development: the Laboratory and Service Center (LSC) in Gelsenkirchen, the Technology Center of Semiconductor Materials (THM) in Freiberg, and the Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics (CSP) in Halle. From 2006 to 2016 Eicke Weber was the director of Fraunhofer ISE. With over 1,100 employees, Fraunhofer ISE is the largest institute for applied solar energy research in Europe. The 2012 Operational Budget including investments was 74.3 million euro.
Robot Research Initiative (RRI) is a research institute dedicated to advanced robotics research. It is an affiliated organization of Chonnam National University in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. Prof. Jong Oh Park moved from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology to Chonnam National University in early 2005 and established RRI in March 2008, where he is still actively in charge. RRI is currently a leading institute in the medical robotics field, especially in the area of biomedical micro/nano robotics. RRI is one of the largest institutions among university robotics laboratories in Korea and competes globally.
