The McMaster University Medical Centre (MUMC) is a major Ontario hospital with three key services: McMaster Children's Hospital, Women's Health Centre and Adult Outpatient Services. It is a teaching hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It is a part of McMaster University, but operated by Hamilton Health Sciences. The hospital network is ranked 2nd in Canada for research according to Research Infosource Inc. [1]

McMaster University Medical Centre delivers a wide range of women's health services including high-risk obstetrics and gynecology to patients throughout the region. It also serves as the home for a range of adult outpatient clinics and day surgery. The site hosts one of Canada's premier digestive disease programs which, in conjunction with McMaster University, conducts more digestive disease research than any other program in the country.

Overview

The McMaster University Medical Centre is the largest facility located at McMaster University. It is a multi-use research hospital that ranks among the largest public buildings in Canada. [2] It is connected to the Life Sciences Building and the Michael DeGroote Centre for Learning & Discovery, which houses many well-funded research groups in areas of genetics, infectious diseases and several specific conditions. [3]

MUMC is located on the same site as McMaster Children's Hospital (Mac Kids).

Helipad

The McMaster Medical Center site is equipped with an offsite helipad for quicker patient transfer to the hospital. This Helipad was built to allow for quicker and safer transfers to hospitals.

Architecture

The building itself is a brutalist structure designed by Eb Zeidler and opened in 1969. Controversial for its design and appropriation of Royal Botanical Gardens land, in 2014 the McMaster Medical Centre was designated a landmark by the Ontario Association of Architects. [4]

Michael George DeGroote was a Canadian businessman and philanthropist from Hamilton, Ontario, who resided in Bermuda. Aside from his business career, he was best known as a major private donor to local educational institutions including McMaster University, McMaster University Medical School, and Hillfield Strathallan College.

The McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences is one of six faculties at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The faculty was established in 1974 to oversee the School of Nursing, the School of Medicine, and Graduate programs in health sciences. Today, the Faculty of Health Sciences oversees 5,000 students, 770 full-time faculty, more than 1,800 part-time faculty, and 28 Canada Research Chairs. The faculty is well known for running the most competitive medical and undergraduate program in Canada. The MD program at McMaster University Medical School receives 5000 applications for 203 positions. The BHSc program at McMaster University receives over 3500 applications for 160 positions annually and was ranked the most competitive undergraduate program in Canada by Yahoo Finance in 2016. Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) is a hospital located in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. The hospital was established in January 1999, and it is a combination of the former Peterborough Civic Hospital and St. Joseph's Health Centre. All acute care services were provided at 1 Hospital Drive, located in the Central-West part of the city, while chronic, rehabilitation and palliative care services, along with some out-patient medical and surgical services, were provided from the 384 Rogers Street site located in the "East City" or Ashburnham neighbourhood of Peterborough. Effective June 2008, all services of the PRHC moved into a new 715,000 sq ft (66,400 m2) hospital building located directly in front of the old Civic Hospital across from the Nicholls Building, which continued to house some Outpatient Mental Health services until 2010.
