1 On 6 May 1990, the National member for Landsborough and former Premier of Queensland, Mike Ahern, resigned. Liberal candidate Joan Sheldon won the resulting by-election on 28 July 1990.
2 On 13 May 1990, the Liberal member for Sherwood, Angus Innes, resigned. Liberal candidate David Dunworth won the resulting by-election on 28 July 1990.
3 Liberal candidate Bob King was initially declared elected as the Liberal member for Nicklin, but the result was overturned by the Court of Disputed Returns on 21 November 1990. The court declared National candidate Neil Turner elected rather than ordering a by-election for the seat.
4 On 5 April 1991, the Labor member for Nundah, Phil Heath, resigned. Labor candidate Terry Sullivan won the resulting by-election on 18 May 1991.
5 On 23 March 1991, the National member for Toowoomba South, Clive Berghofer, vacated his seat. National Party candidate Mike Horan won the resulting by-election on 18 May 1991.

An election was held in the Australian state of Queensland on 17 February 2001 to elect the 89 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The result of the election was the return of the Labor Party (ALP) government of Premier Peter Beattie, with an increased majority in a landslide. Labor won 66 seats, easily the most it has ever won in Queensland and one of Labor's best-ever results nationwide. There was a 10.07% swing towards Labor, while One Nation suffered a 13.98% swing against it, losing eight seats.

The three-term Labor government, led by Premier Dr Carmen Lawrence since 12 February 1990, was defeated by the Liberal-National coalition, led by Opposition Leader Richard Court since 12 May 1992.

The major parties contesting the election were the Queensland Labor Party led by Premier Vince Gair, the Labor Party led by former Deputy Premier Jack Duggan, and the Country-Liberal coalition led by Frank Nicklin.

The 1992 Queensland state election was held on 19 September 1992.

Members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly who served in the 56th Parliament held their seats from 2015 to 2019. They were as elected at the 2015 state election and at by-elections. The Speaker was Shelley Hancock.
