He was the vice-president of Artis, the Amsterdam zoo; a member of the Netherlands Entomological Society and the Société entomologique de France. The butterfly Troides vandepolli was named, by Samuel Constantinus Snellen van Vollenhoven, curator of the Leiden Museum, in his honour.
