The Women's United Soccer Association, often abbreviated to the WUSA, was the world's first women's soccer league in which all the players were paid as professionals. Founded in February 2000, the league began its first season in April 2001 with eight teams in the United States. The USL W-League was a North American amateur women's soccer developmental organization. The USL W League is a women's amateur soccer league in the United States planning to begin play in May 2022. It was announced on June 8, 2021 by the United Soccer League with 8 founding clubs. It follows the USL W-League, a similar league that existed from 1995 to 2015. The USL says the inaugural season will include at least 30 teams.
