Midleton CBS Secondary School is a Catholic secondary school for boys, located in Midleton, County Cork, Ireland. Midleton CBS was founded by the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1867. [1]
The Christian Brothers arrived in Midleton in 1867 at the request of the parish priest who recognized the need of a dedicated school to educate the town's Roman Catholic male youth, at a time when the Church of Ireland's Midleton College was fast expanding. The local community provided donations for the cost of the construction, and the school opened on 3 April 1867, with over 300 pupils joining in its first week. [2] The last of the Christian Brothers left the school in 2003, with the monastery and old school building being taken over by the Diocese of Cloyne for parish use. [3]
The school buildings were massively extended in the 2010s, in a project which cost €12.6 million. [4]
The school offers both the Junior and Leaving Certificate cycles. The curriculum teaches first years: Religion; Irish as L2; English as L1; Mathematics; French as L2; German as L2; Science; Business Studies; History; Geography; CSPE; SPHE; Woodwork; Technical Graphics; Art; Music; Technology and Physical Education. In second year, the students may choose to drop one of the (L2) foreign languages.
After completing the Junior Certificate, the school requires students to complete a mandatory Transition Year. In 5th year, students begin the Leaving Cert cycle. Irish as L2, English L1 and Mathematics are compulsory. [5]
The school has a notable history in hurling, especially the Dr. Harty Cup which has been won a total of 4 times by the school. [6] [ failed verification ] Midleton CBS also have a successful athletics set up and have won All-Ireland's in a number of athletic events. [7] [ failed verification ]
Cloyne is a small town to the southeast of Midleton in eastern County Cork. It is also a see city of the Anglican Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, while also giving its name to a Roman Catholic diocese. St Colman's Cathedral in Cloyne is a cathedral church of the Church of Ireland while the Pro Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cloyne, Cobh Cathedral of Saint Colman, overlooks Cork Harbour. Cloyne is within the Cork East Dáil constituency.
Joseph Deane is an Irish retired hurler who played for East Cork club Killeagh. He played for the Cork senior hurling team for 13 years, during which time he usually lined out as a left corner-forward. Diminutive in size but noted for his deadly accuracy in front of goal, Deane is regarded as one of Cork's all-time greatest and most popular players.
Diarmuid O'Sullivan is an Irish hurling coach and hurler who plays for Cork Premier Championship club Cloyne. He played for the Cork senior hurling team for 12 years, during which time he usually lined out as a full-back. A fan favourite who was noted for his swashbuckling style during his inter-county career, O'Sullivan is considered a "Cork legend".
Brian Corcoran is an Irish former hurler and Gaelic footballer who played as a centre-back and as a full-forward for the Cork senior teams.
Cloyne GAA club is located in the small town of Cloyne in County Cork, Ireland. The club plays in the Imokilly division of Cork GAA. Founded in 1887 they have yet to win a Cork Senior Hurling Championship title and have the dubious distinction of losing in 3 successive finals. Christy Ring, one of the clubs most famous players, played for the team before moving to play for Glen Rovers in 1941. He was sometimes known as The Wizard of Cloyne and a statue commemorating him stands in the centre of the town.

The Dr. Harty Cup is an annual inter-schools hurling competition organised by the Munster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It has been contested every year, except on three occasions, since 1918. As the pinnacle of inter-schools hurling competition in the province of Munster, the winning of a Harty Cup medal is sometimes viewed as more important than an All-Ireland medal for some players.
