Early life

Mila was born into a family with a military and artistic background. Her father, Shahed Islam, served as an officer in the armed forces, while her mother, Swapna Islam, was a Nazrul Sangeet artist. Mila's musical training began at the age of three under her mother's guidance. As she grew a little older, she began taking formal training from different classical music ustad (masters). After completing her Secondary School Certificate, she decided to build a career in the music industry. [2]

Career

Mila got her break with her first debut solo album “Fele Asha”, which was released in 2006, composed by various composers. Mila's second album, Chapter 2, had songs named "Rupbane Nachey Kamor Dolaiya" and "Baburam Shapura", composed by Fuad. Her third album, Re-defined, was released in 2009, also composed by Fuad. This album contained songs such as “Dola De Re” and “Tumi Ki Shara Dibe.” [3]

After 2011, Mila released songs "Nacho" (2015), "Ishshor Jane" (2016), "Aissalla" (2020), and "Tona Tuni" (2024).

In addition to her solo career, Mila has worked as a playback singer in the Bangladeshi film industry. Her vocals have featured in soundtracks for commercial films. After a seven-year hiatus from playback singing, Mila made her comeback in 2025 with a song titled "Prem Pukure Borshi Fele Anbore Dhore" for the Bangladeshi film Insaaf. [4]

Live performances

Mila performed at Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Centre on 19 November 2008 in Fuad Live, a music event featuring live performances of songs composed, re-arranged and mixed by Fuad. [5]

At the 2011 Cricket World Cup opening ceremony, Mila performed the tournament's official welcome song, "O Prithibi Ebar Ese Bangladesh Nao Chine", alongside fellow artists Ibrar Tipu, Arnob, Balam, Kona, and Elita Karim in the 2011 Cricket World Cup, which was co-hosted by Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka. [6]

Mila has performed in various countries including India, Japan, Dubai, Jordan, England, France, Germany, Australia, America, and Canada. [2]

Personal life

Mila married her 10 years long boyfriend, S M Parvez Sanjari, a US-Bangla Airlines pilot on 12 May 2017. [8] On 5 October 2017, Islam filed a case against Sanjari with Uttara West Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. [9] She went to police alleging Sanjari of abuse and he was arrested that day. [10] On 7 October 2017, on a later deleted Facebook post, Islam alleged Sanjari of torturing and cheating, and also announced her intention of divorcing him. [9] [11] Sanjari was arrested on 6 October. [8] After getting bail, Sanjari sent a divorce letter to Islam on 31 January 2018 and the divorce was completed on 22 May 2018. [8]

After failing to provide evidence against her ex-husband for more than 1.5 years, an arrest warrant was issued against Mila Islam on 23 June 2019. [12] 4 weeks later, she went to the court on 22 July 2019. [12]

More than 5 years since Mila Islam filed the abuse case, she withdrew it in October 2022. [13]

On 2 June 2019, Sanjari suffered an assassination attempt with acid attack by Mila Islam in front of his house. [14] [15] Around 8-10% of his body was burnt as a result. [8] Sanjari's father, SM Nasiruddin, filed a case against Islam and, her associate, Kim John Peter Haldar. [8] In February 2019, the court ordered the police to arrest Mila Islam. [16] In December 2020, the police submitted a chargesheet against them. [17] In November 2021, a complaint was formed against them by the Acid Crime Suppression Tribunal. [18]

In September 2019, Sanjari filed a case against Mila Islam and her father, Shahidul Islam, for keeping secret from him of Mila's prior marriage to an ex-army officer's son in 2004. [19] In March 2020, Islam secured bail on this case. [19] [20] In June 2023, court dismissed both of the cases of cyber crimes of Islam and Sanjari filed against each other in 2019. [21] [22]
