The People's Action Party is a major conservative centre-right political party in Singapore and is one of the three contemporary political parties represented in Parliament, alongside the Workers' Party (WP) and Progress Singapore Party (PSP).
Goh Keng Swee, born Robert Goh Keng Swee, was a Singaporean politician who served as the second Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, serving from 20 March 1973 to 1 January 1985. Considered one of the founding fathers of Singapore, he was also one of the founders of the People's Action Party, which has ruled the country continuously since independence.

Singapore, officially the State of Singapore, was one of the 14 states of Malaysia from 1963 to 1965. Malaysia was formed on 16 September 1963 by the merger of the Federation of Malaya with the former British colonies of North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore. The country's economic infrastructure was developed, racial tension was eliminated and an independent national defence system was created. Singapore evolved from a dying nation to first world status towards the end of the 20th century.
