Mississippi Highway 556 (MS 556) is a state highway in southwestern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 184 in the town of Meadville and travels southeastwards. MS 556 crosses over the concurrency of U.S. Route 84 (US 84) and US 98 inside the Homochitto National Forest, and the route ends at US 98 south of Bude. The route was designated around 1953, after a gravel road from US 84 to US 98, which had existed since 1928, was paved.

Route description

All of MS 556 is located in Franklin County. [2] In 2017, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) calculated 330 vehicles traveling on MS 556 southeast of Victor Drive on average each day. [3] The route is legally defined in Mississippi Code § 65-3-3, [4] and it is maintained by MDOT as part of the Mississippi State Highway System. [1]

MS 556 starts at the three-way junction with MS 184 in Meadville, and it begins travelling southeastward. [5] As the route is inside the Homochitto National Forest, [2] it travels through a heavily forested area. The road intersects Fourth Street, which ends at the Franklin County elementary, middle, and high schools. [6] MS 556 leaves the city limits of the town south of a road leading to the Meadville Municipal Park. [5] [6] The route crosses over US 84 without an interchange, [6] and it intersects Mullers Lane south of the overpass. Access to US 84 and US 98 are only available at both termini of the route. The road leaves the national forest and travels southeastwards towards the Homochitto River. MS 556 turns eastward near the river, and it ends at its eastern terminus at US 98 south of Bude. The road continues as River Road Southeast, a road that travels back to MS 184. [2]

History

A gravel road from Meadville to another road south of Bude has existed since 1928. [7] The road at the western terminus was designated as US 84 by 1935, replacing MS 22. [8] [9] The gravel road was paved by 1953, [10] [11] and it was designated as MS 556 around two years later. The road at eastern terminus was also designated as US 98 by 1955, after being renumbered to MS 44 earlier. [11] [12] By 1984, US 84 was rerouted around Meadville, [13] [14] and its old alignment remained in the state highway system as MS 184. [5]

MS 69 then goes through downtown Columbus, and ends at U.S. Route 45 and US 82 in the west side of the town. Before the road was designated as MS 69 in 1941, it was a gravel road from Columbus to the state line. The road was paved in asphalt in 1953. Mississippi Highway 555 is a state highway in southwestern Mississippi. The route has two sections, both in Adams County. The first section starts at Ogden Road and travels northwestward to its terminus at US 61. The second section starts at the concurrency of MS 930 and MS 932 and the concurrency of US 61 and US 84 in Natchez. MS 555 travels northward through Pine Ridge and ends at Anna's Bottom Road near the Anna Site. The route travels by a few historical locations, including the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church.

Mississippi Highway 450 is a highway in western Mississippi. Its western terminus is at MS 1 south of Benoit. The route travels east to its eastern terminus at U.S. Route 61 and US 278. It was designated in 1956, starting at MS 1 south of Scott, and ending at Choctaw. Starting in 1962, the section near Stringtown was rerouted significantly. The last realignment was in 1974, where the section near Stringtown was straightened, and US 61 moved east of Choctaw.

Mississippi Highway 306 is a state highway in northern Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 51 in Coldwater, and it travels eastward to an interchange at Interstate 55 (I-55) on the northern edge of the town. The road continues eastward across northern Tate County and ends at MS 305 near Independence. MS 306 was designated in 1952, and it was constructed in 1953 from US 51 to MS 305. The route was paved in asphalt by 1956, and an interchange was built at I-55 by 1967.

Mississippi Highway 37 is a state highway in central Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 84 near Collins. The road travels northward through the town of Taylorsville, crossing from Covington County to Smith County. MS 37 turns northwestward and ends at MS 35 in Raleigh. The road first existed as part of MS 35, and it became a spur route of MS 35 by 1941. It was renumbered as MS 37 by 1950, and fully paved by 1952.

Mississippi Highway 498 is a state highway in eastern Mississippi. The highway starts at U.S. Route 45 near Porterville, and it travels eastward from its western terminus. One mile (1.6 km) later, MS 498 ends near a railroad crossing west of Porterville, and the road continues as Porterville–Alabama Road. The route was designated around 1957, from US 45 to the Alabama–Mississippi state line. MS 498 was truncated to Porterville by 1970.

Mississippi Highway 41 (MS 41) is a state highway in northeastern Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 45 and US 278 north of Wren and travels westwards. It then intersects US 45 Alt. east of Okolona. The road enters Okolona, and intersects MS 32 and MS 245. MS 41 then turns northwest and travels toward Pontotoc. Once inside the city, the route turns north at MS 15 and travels through downtown Pontotoc. MS 41 ends at its intersection with MS 9 and MS 338. The route that became MS 41 was first used as an Indian trail. The route was designated by 1932 from Amory to Pontotoc, and it was truncated from Amory to US 45 by 1955. The entirety of MS 41 was paved by 1958.

Mississippi Highway 569 is a state highway in southwestern Mississippi. The route starts at the Mississippi–Louisiana state line, and it travels northeastward from that point. It intersects MS 48 southwest of Liberty, and MS 569 becomes concurrent with it. Inside Liberty, MS 569 is also concurrent with MS 24 briefly before travelling northeastward out of the city. It continues through Amite County and it ends at U.S. Route 98 in extreme southwestern Lincoln County.

Mississippi Highway 388 is a state highway in eastern Mississippi. The route starts at the intersection of U.S. Route 45 Alternate and MS 852 in Brooksville, and it travels east to US 45 soon after. The route intersects MS 792 near Cliftonville, and it ends at Alabama State Route 86 at the Alabama–Mississippi state line. MS 388 was designated around 1957, from US 45 to a point west of the state line. The route was extended to Bigbee Valley and to the state line by 1974 and 1990, respectively.

Mississippi Highway 367 is a short state highway located in northeastern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 356 near Jacinto and travels northeastward. Mississippi Highway 434 is a short state highway in western Mississippi. The route travels from U.S. Route 61 near Nitta Yuma and travels eastward. After crossing a creek, the road travels northeastward and enters Delta City, and the route ends inside the unincorporated community. The route was constructed around 1951, connecting from US 61 to Delta City. An extension along a county road to US 49W existed from 1957 to 1967.

Mississippi Highway 436 is a state highway in western Mississippi. The route starts at Eastside Lake Washington Road in Glen Allan and travels eastward. The road intersects MS 1 in Hampton and turns northeastward. It ends near Percy at U.S. Route 61. MS 436 was designated in 1957, along a road from US 61 to a point near the Washington–Sharkey county line. The route was extended westward to Glen Allan along a state-maintained road in 1958, and also eastward to Belzoni via a county road in 1967. The route east of US 61 was decommissioned by 1967.

Mississippi Highway 826 is a short state highway in western Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 61 south of Rolling Fork. The road then travels northward through farmland, and MS 826 ends at its intersection with MS 14, west of the town. The road was constructed in 1955 to bypass Rolling Fork, and the route was designated around 1957, after a proposal by Sharkey County to transfer the road to state maintenance.

Mississippi Highway 382 is a state highway in eastern Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 45 Alternate near Prairie and travels eastward. The road travels through farmland as it reaches Prairie. MS 382 then ends at MS 25 near Aberdeen. The road was constructed around 1951 from MS 45W west of Prairie to US 45 in Aberdeen, and it was designated by 1958. The eastern terminus was changed to MS 25 from US 45 by 1967.

Mississippi Highway 510 is a state highway in eastern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 145 near Shubuta and travels eastward. The road turns southward near Matherville, and the route ends southeast of the unincorporated area. The road was constructed around 1957, and majority of the road was paved by 1967. A portion of the route east of Matherville was removed from the state highway system in 1999.

Mississippi Highway 462 is a state highway in western Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 61 near Port Gibson, and it travels eastward. The road then turns northeastward, and the route ends at Willows Road and Old Port Gibson Road near Willows. MS 462 was designated around 1958, as a gravel road extending eastward from US 61 near Port Gibson. The road was extended to MS 461 from 1960 to 1963, then to the Natchez Trace Parkway from 1967 to 1998.

Mississippi Highway 403 is a state highway in central Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 82 and MS 15 in Mathiston, and it travels north away from the town. It then turns east near Natchez Trace Parkway and then travels below it. MS 403 ends at the intersection of Clarkson Road and Old US 82 near a county highway maintenance barn. The route was designated by 1960, after a paved road extending from Mathiston was constructed around 1958. An extension northwards to MS 50 and MS 341 existed from 1960 to 1967.

Mississippi Highway 902 is a state highway in central Mississippi. The route starts at MS 481 in Burns and it travels northeastwards. It travels within the Bienville National Forest and it ends at MS 35 in Lorena. The road was constructed around 1967 and was paved by 1968. The route was signed as MS 902 on state maps by 1998.

Mississippi Highway 184 is an east–west state highway in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is a non-continuous highway, composed of segments from the previous path of U.S. Highway 84 (US 84) that have been displaced by new construction.
