After retiring from the police in 2018, Murad ran for governor of Maluku in the 2018 governor election. Murad was supported by his own Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle in the election, as well as a number of other parties. Including the Great Indonesia Movement Party, United Development Party, People's Conscience Party, and a number of other smaller parties. [4]

Murad was paired with Barnabas Orno as his running mate, and faced incumbent governor Said Assagaff, who had the support of Golkar, the Prosperous Justice Party, the Democratic Party, and the Crescent Star party. Independent candidate Herman Koedoeboen, also ran in the election. [4]

The Murad-Orno ticket won the election with 40,83%, defeating Said, who received 31,16%, and Herman, who received 28,01%. [5] [6]

Murad was sworn in as governor on 24 April 2019, by president Joko Widodo, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. Together with his deputy governor, Barnabas. [7]

Kempupera project controversy

On 18 December 2019, Deputy Governor Barnabas Orno was summoned by the Corruption Eradication Commission as a witness related to the alleged bribery of a road project at the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing in 2016, when Orno was still the Regent of Southwest Maluku. Reportedly, Murad was only notified the day before, and was not consulted by Orno beforehand. [8]

Covid-19

When the COVID-19 pandemic spread to Maluku, governor Murad established a series of "large-scale social restrictions," instead of lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus. Recently, governor Murad supported limited face-to-face learning in Ambon City to be implemented immediately. Stating "Now that Ambon is level 3, face-to-face learning must be carried out." [9]

Personal life

Murad has a wife named Widya Pratiwi, and together they have for children. Including Mega Natasya, Reza Ananta P, Nabila Athaya Ismail, and Murad JR Ismail. [2]

Ternate, also known as the City of Ternate, is a city in the Indonesian province of North Maluku and an island in the Maluku Islands. It was the de facto provincial capital of North Maluku before Sofifi on the nearby coast of Halmahera became the capital in 2010. It is off the west coast of Halmahera, and is composed of eight islands: Ternate, the biggest and main island of the city, and Moti, Hiri, Tifure, Mayau, Makka, Mano, and Gurida. The governor and deputy governor of Maluku are elected through general elections which are held every five years. The current governor of Maluku is Murad Ismail and the deputy governor is Barnabas N. Orno.

Murad managed to defeat Said, becoming governor on 24 April 2019.

2022 Haruku Island riot was a riot that occurred on 26 January 2022, a riot between villagers of Kariu village and Pelauw village as well Ori village in Haruku Island, Central Maluku Regency. The riot was caused by a dispute over land borders close to the boundaries between the villages. Three people died in the riot and 211 houses burned down. Additionally, four people were injured. Hundreds of villagers took refuge in nearby forests following the violence.

Tiakur is a kelurahan and the regency seat of Southwest Maluku Regency in Maluku, Indonesia. The town was purposely built as the capital of the Southwest Maluku Regency following its creation in 2008. It was created as the result of a political debate during the creation of the regency, although smaller than the larger and more developed town of the regency, Wonreli on Kisar Island. The town is located mainly within the boundaries of Tiakur kelurahan, with a population of 4,227 as of 2022.
