On 9 July 2024, Carol, Hannah, and Louise Hunt were killed in their home in Bushey, in the south of England. The primary weapon was identified as a crossbow; paramedics found the three women injured at around 19:00 and all died at the scene shortly afterwards. A manhunt ensued, with police searching for Kyle Marcus Clifford, who was found injured the next day near his home in the London Borough of Enfield. A house several houses along the road, had caught footage of the murderer getting inside a car with a bag. [2] [3] [4]

Murders and manhunt

Kyle Clifford went to the home of his ex-girlfriend, Louise Hunt, at around midday on 9 July 2024, in Bushey, near Watford. Their relationship had recently ended and he had requested to collect some belongings. [5] Carol, Hannah, and Louise Hunt were then attacked. [6] During the attack, Hannah texted her partner and asked him to call 999, before she called 999 herself. Clifford then fled the scene. [5] [7] Armed police were sent to the house just before 19:00, with ambulance staff in attendance. The responders found the three women seriously injured and attempted to treat them, but all three died at the scene. [6]

The police appealed for the public's help locating Clifford, warning that he was considered armed and dangerous and to call 999 rather than approach him. Following a 22-hour manhunt mostly in the London Borough of Enfield, police found Clifford injured in a cemetery near his home in Enfield at around 18:00 on 10 July 2024. Police also recovered a crossbow. Clifford was initially treated for his injuries at the cemetery before being taken to the Royal London Hospital. [6]

Victims

The victims were Carol Hunt, aged 61, and two of her daughters: Hannah Hunt, aged 28, and Louise Hunt, aged 25. [2] Hannah was a beautician, and Louise owned and ran a dog grooming business. The women were the family of Amy (daughter and sister), and BBC Radio 5 Live and Sky Sports racing commentator John Hunt (husband and father). [8] [9] The police had no previous contact with the family. [10]

According to information given in the coroner's inquest, Carol died from stab wounds, while Hannah and Louise died from crossbow bolt injuries. Hannah was alive, found in the main doorway, when the police arrived at the address. [7]

Perpetrator

Kyle Marcus Clifford (born 5 April 1998) was 26 years old at the time of the killings. He lived in Enfield throughout his entire life, and is a former security guard [6] and soldier, who briefly served in the Queen's Dragoon Guards. [10] After being found on 10 July, he was taken to a nearby hospital and was treated for serious injuries; the police confirmed that no shots had been fired when they apprehended him. [11] It was later confirmed that Clifford's injuries were self-inflicted, and that he had undergone surgery for a chest wound. He was kept under police guard at hospital but was unfit to be arrested due to his injuries. [5]

Clifford's brother Bradley is a convicted murderer, having been sentenced at the Old Bailey in 2018 and still in prison at the time of the Hunts' murders. [6] Police searched a property relating to Bradley as well as Clifford's home. [10]

Clifford was arrested on the evening of 11 July, on suspicion of three counts of murder, [12] but remained in hospital unable to be questioned because of his injuries. [13] On 17 September 2024 he was charged with the murders of the women, [14] appearing remotely at Westminster Magistrates' Court. He was also charged with the false imprisonment of Louise Hunt, [15] and with two counts of possessing an offensive weapon. [15]

On 19 December 2024 Clifford appeared remotely at Cambridge Crown Court where he pleaded not-guilty to the three counts of murder, as well as the charges of false imprisonment and of possessing an offensive weapon. [16] He was additionally charged with one count of rape. [16]

On 22 January 2025, he changed his pleas to guilty for all three charges of murder, the charges of false imprisonment and of possessing an offensive weapon. [17] He pleaded not-guilty to the charge of raping Louise Hunt. [17]

Response

A vigil was held in Bushey for the victims. [11] The triple killings were heavily reported on and considered incredibly shocking. [18] [9] In the days following there was support shown to John Hunt, husband and father of the women, in various forms. The Professional Jockey Association confirmed that jockeys would wear black armbands and observe moments of silence at upcoming races, while Mark Chapman spoke in support of Hunt in his UEFA Euro 2024 semi-final broadcast ahead of England defeating the Netherlands. [9] After the match, other football personalities directed attention back to the Hunts. [11]

In February 2024, the Home Office reviewed evidence to see if there was a need to legislate to restrict the ownership of crossbows as they had been used in several attacks. [6] [18] A new government took office in July 2024, with the Home Office announcing that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper would look at the findings of the earlier review. [11] [18] Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the killings as "awful" and pledged that the government would look at crossbow legislation in response. [11]

He was found guilty on 25 February 2008 of the murders of Marsha McDonnell and Amélie Delagrange and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, and sentenced to life imprisonment. On 23 June 2011, Bellfield was further found guilty of the murder of Milly Dowler. On both occasions, the judge imposed a whole life order, meaning that Bellfield will serve the sentence without the possibility of parole. Bellfield was the first prisoner in history to have received two whole life orders.

Kevin Brendan McDaid was a community worker in Coleraine, Northern Ireland who was killed by a mob outside his home on 24 May 2009. The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the attack was sectarian. His wife Evelyn was also attacked, as was a pregnant woman who pleaded with the attackers. Evelyn McDaid subsequently appealed for no retaliation to be taken, pointing out that her husband would not want this and that theirs was a mixed marriage – he was Catholic, she Protestant. Their neighbour Damien Fleming was also attacked and was hospitalised in a coma.

Eric Matthew Frein is an American domestic terrorist and murderer, convicted and sentenced to death for the 2014 Pennsylvania State Police barracks attack in which he shot and killed one State Trooper, and seriously injured another. A letter to his parents made it clear that he hoped to spark a revolution by his actions.

On September 12, 2014, during a shift change at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Blooming Grove Township, two state troopers were shot with a .308 caliber rifle. One trooper died at the scene and another was taken to a hospital where he recovered. Eric Frein was identified by the police as the only suspect in the case, and led the police on a weeks-long manhunt. He was eventually captured at an abandoned airport hangar on October 30, and charged with terrorism, murder, and attempted murder. Frein was convicted of all charges in April 2017, and subsequently sentenced to death.

On September 23, 2016, a mass shooting occurred at Cascade Mall in Burlington, Washington, U.S. Five people were killed in the incident. The gunman was identified as Arcan Cetin, a 20-year-old who emigrated from Turkey as a child with his family. He was arrested the following day in Oak Harbor, Washington, his hometown. On September 26, he confessed to committing the shooting. On April 16, 2017, Cetin killed himself via hanging in his jail cell.

On November 20, 2016, Benjamin Marconi, a detective with the San Antonio Police Department, was shot to death in San Antonio, Texas. In the shooting, a motorist stopped his car, got out, and shot and wounded Marconi while the latter was sitting in his marked patrol car in front of the department's headquarters, writing a ticket for another driver during a routine traffic stop.

On 20 June 2020, shortly before 19:00 BST, a man with a knife attacked people who were socialising in Forbury Gardens, Reading, Berkshire, United Kingdom. Three men died from their wounds, and three other people were seriously injured. Khairi Saadallah, a 25-year-old Libyan male refugee, was arrested shortly afterwards. He was charged with three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder; he pleaded guilty. In January 2021, Saadallah was sentenced to a whole-life term.

Jovenel Moïse, the 43rd president of Haiti, was assassinated on 7 July 2021 at 1 A.M. E.D.T. (UTC−04:00) at his residence in Port-au-Prince. A group of 28 foreign mercenaries, mostly from Colombia, are alleged to be responsible for the killing. First Lady Martine Moïse was also shot multiple times in the attack, and was airlifted to the United States for emergency treatment. Later in the day, USGPN killed three of the suspected assassins and arrested 20 more. A manhunt was launched for other gunmen as well as the masterminds of the attack. Haitian chief prosecutor Bedford Claude confirmed plans to question Moïse's top bodyguards; none of the president's security guards were killed or injured in the attack. U.S. authorities have since arrested eleven suspects alleged to have conspired in the assassination. Martine Moïse and former prime minister Claude Joseph were formally charged on 19 February 2024 with conspiring in the assassination.

On September 4, 2022, Myles Sanderson killed 11 and injured 18 people in a mass stabbing at 13 locations on the James Smith Cree Nation and in Weldon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Some of the victims are believed to have been targeted, while others were randomly attacked. It is one of the deadliest massacres in Canadian history.
