Mustapha Khalid Palash (popularly known as Mustapha Khalid Palash; born 11 September 1963) [1] is a Bangladeshi architect. He is considered one of the leading contemporary architects of Bangladesh. [2] He is also an artist, multi instrumentalist-singer [3] and painter. [4] He is the editor of quarterly DOT: Journal on Art & Architecture, [5] one of the prominent architecture magazines of Bangladesh.

Early life and education

Palash was born to artist Afroz Mustapha (d. 2018). [6] He received his bachelor of architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1988. [7] After graduation, he taught there until 1998 as an assistant professor. He also worked as a visiting faculty of architecture at University of Asia Pacific, AIUB, North South University, [8] BRAC University [9]

Career

After graduating from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, he joined forces with fellow graduates, Mohammed Foyez Ulla and Shahzia Islam, to establish Vistaara Architects. [10]

Palash is considered one of the very few celebrity architects of the country. [11] He has participated in several architectural exhibitions, seminars, workshops, [12] architecture week, [13] and consultancies, [14] nationally and globally. [15]

For the last two decades, Palash, with his team and his company Vistaara Architects, created numerous outstanding architectural masterpieces in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. [16]

Palash is a member of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh, international associate member of AIA and a member of Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). He is also a member of the World Architecture Community and the Institute of Architects Bangladesh. Palash is currently the elected president of Architecture Alumni Association of BUET (7th Executive Committee 2013 & 2014). [17]

Visual art

Besides being an architect, Palash is also an ardent painter. His solo painting exhibition titled Of Conflict and Harmony was held in 2009 at Gallery of Fine Arts of Asiatic Society, Dhaka. [18] [19] In June 2011 he had his third solo exhibition of Doodle Art titled Of Tears and Joyat Dhaka Art Centre. [20]

From his childhood, art has been keenly connected with Palash's umbilical cord. As the son of a painter, he grew up in an artistic ambiance. During this time, he started to detect the imaginative world and documented his vision and observation. [21]

Zainul Abedin, also known as Shilpacharya was a Bangladeshi painter. He became well known in 1944 through his series of paintings depicting some of the great famines in Bengal during its British colonial period. After the Partition of Indian subcontinent he moved to East Pakistan. In 1948, he helped to establish the Institute of Arts and Crafts at the University of Dhaka. The Indian Express has described him as a legendary Bangladeshi painter and activist. Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable nations in the world due to climate change. As the ninth most populous country and twelfth most densely populated countries in the world, its rising population and limited land space have put tremendous strains on the urban ecosystem. The capital of Dhaka itself underwent severe transformations in recent years to catch up the increased rate of urbanisation. This change was paralleled by a boom in the real estate, construction and housing industry. According to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dhaka is one of the most polluted cities in the world.

Sahibzada Sanwar Azam Sunny is a Bangladeshi-born American artist, environmental activist and entrepreneur. He became fluent in multiple languages and is one of the youngest artists to have a solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery with work in permanent collection at the Liberation War Museum. He finished four years of American high school in eight months with honours and was a college senior by the age of eighteen, teaching university courses in engineering at the age of 21.

Mohammad Foyez Ullah is a Bangladeshi architect. He is the founder and principal architect of Volumezero Limited, and was the co-founder of Vistaara Architects. He started his career as an educator and taught as an assistant professor at the Department of Architecture, BUET from 1994 until 1998.
