Najib Tareque, (born September 5, 1970, as Abu Najib Mohammed Tareque) is a Bengali artist, printmaker and writer based on Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is best known for his new media artworks and one of the pioneers of online art galleries in Bangladesh. Tareque was the founding member of Jolrong, one of the first online art galleries in South Asia. [1] Since 1987, he has been part of various group and solo exhibitions both in the country and abroad. He participates more than twenty individual and joint exhibitions in the country and abroad.
In 1998 he was awarded by the Forest Department of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Abu Najib Mohammad Tareque was born on 5 September 1970, in Borogur Gola, Dinajpur, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). His father was Tamizuddin and mother Nujratun Nisa. Tareque is the fifth among seven siblings. By his father's career, his childhood and early life span in Thakurgaon, Rajshahi and in Dinajpur district. [2]
His early education began in the village's school. After completing school exam from Rajshahi Collegiate School in 1986, he studied Dinajpur Government College. In 1987, he admitted studying Printmaking in Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Dhaka. [3] He was graduated in 1994 and after finished post graduation in 2000 from the faculty. [4] While being a student, he was merely acting in the movement against anti-autocracy movement, and for the Nirmul Committee. [5]
Tareque worked as a chief artist for such national newspapers, including Daily Jugantor from 1999 to 2001 and Daily Janakantha from 2002 to 2004. [4] [1] He also worked with Ekushey Television from 2001 to 2003. From 2004 to 2011, he was also appointed as a brand marketing consultant of the Standard Chartered Bank Limited in Dhaka. [4] [1] Besides, he has been appointed as the Information Technology Secretary of the Bangladesh Charushilpi Sangsad. [6] [7]
The birth of art is in the deepest part of the brain death is also there. An art piece is the skeleton of art. In the sells market, art is not sold, the skeleton of art is sold there. The buyer builds up his own taste by buying art pieces. A child creates art in order to prove its existence. Without expression, it has no other way to prove its existence. With the growth of age, its fact of expression grows more. According to the clash of different opposite fact, the child gets attracted by different social rules & regulation, in addition to that, sexual role or the recreating power which is to preserve the existence or creativity hides his spontaneous form of expression. Social existence becomes like his own existence when he feels that he and the society are the different forms of the same existence, he is the unit of the society, his creativity becomes spontaneous again. Abstraction is not a style. The soul of art is found in abstraction. The extremely delicate angle of vision creates abstract art or breaks down the temporary impenetrable wall. God is the symbol of loving urge, sexuality is the proof of creativity.

Tareque is mainly a printmaker. However, he did numerous work in the several mediums including oil, water, and acrylic, but he mostly on the mix-media. [9] Tareque's earlier works highlighted nature, structure, figures, sketches, and portrait became the subject of his paintings. His portraits and figures are considered as semi-realistic and often surrealistic or impressionistic. [10] Most of his paintings have vibrant colours, and the backgrounds are moving is dominant. Initially, multivariate fragility noted in his paintings that often reminds the artworks of the Fauvist artists. [11] Paul Klee's painting are often remembered when analyzing the space and intention of Tareque's painting "Antarer Anusandhan" and "Naree Banam Naree". [11] Tareque has often used the Arabic alphabet and the use of words in the art of painting. [10] Tareque has tried to create own art form mainly by synthesizing different doctrines of paintings rather than a specific one. There is a logical appreciation about the life of artist Tareque in the opening words: "God is amorphous, inactive, and absolute emptiness, religions are the historic events for the human society, which increasingly becoming history. Those who have a lack of knowledge of history are either religious, maybe anti-religious, or antipathetic." [2]
In 1994, two of his solo exhibitions were organized. [5] "Joy Manabata" is his first solo exhibition which was held in May 1994 with Alliance Française in Dhaka. [12] Most of the 42 paintings of the exhibition were the subject matter of the human. Where the human form has been depicted in the form of Durga, Nomad, Ravana, Ullas, etc. Some paintings of Tareque, who believe in the Evolution theory, are found in the resemblance of the non-human face with the human body, through which he has expressed his desire to illustrate the ugly image of the human. In 2009, he participated in the group exhibition held in Mumbai, India. [2] He got acquainted [3] with the illustration of book covers and literary magazines, dissiging of clothing, etc. [6] [13] In Bangladesh, he tried to turn the traditional illustrations of the book covers into modern art. [5]
In 2015, Tareque took an initiative to create an artists hub and launched a gallery Studio 6/6 at Mohammedpur, Dhaka, [14] when the co-founder was his daughter Taiara Farhana Tareque. [15] After initial launch of the studio has hosted several exhibitions, workshops, and events featuring artists from different talents, as musicians, painters, writers etc. [15]
Online-based conceptual virtual art project Art Makes Us Human starts since July 2015 through the social media Instagram. [1] Later in May 2016, a solo exhibition of the project was organized in the Studio 6/6 Gallery located in Dhaka. It was first physical exhibition of its kind in the country, [1] [16] with around 15 physical prints of digital paintings. [14] As a part of the project, Tareque composed his old and new combination of decoration, [17] using many of his previously drawn illustrations for various books, newspapers and magazines. [16] The colourful artworks mostly using bold strokes, striking colours and enthralling patterns to create human faces and figures, birds and different geometric forms. [14] Since its online launching nearly more than 1500 artworks are published under the project, [14] in various social media including Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, and Facebook. [17]
Najib married Bangladeshi painter Farhana Afroz Bappy. They have a daughter Taiara Farhana Tareque (born 1994), she is also a young artist, and a son Farhand Abu Tamjiad. In 2015, the artist family launched Studio 6/6, an art spaces based in Dhaka. [18] [19]
In April 2017, a joint exhibition of this couple was organized in Dhaka at their own art gallery named Studio 6/6 under the heading "Nirman" ("Construction"). [4] [20]

Apart from composing art, Tareque has studied literature; wrote verse, [5] essay, discussion, etc. In 1996, he wrote Kobitar Chitrayon Proshonge about painting and literature, published under the Young Writer' Project of Bangla Academy. [2] He also published two volume of drawings books for the children. [2] [6]
Zainul Abedin, also known as Shilpacharya was a Bangladeshi painter. He became well known in 1944 through his series of paintings depicting some of the great famines in Bengal during its British colonial period. After the Partition of Indian subcontinent he moved to East Pakistan. In 1948, he helped to establish the Institute of Arts and Crafts at the University of Dhaka. The Indian Express has described him as a legendary Bangladeshi painter and activist. Like many of his contemporaries, his paintings on the Bengal famine of 1943 are viewed as his most characteristic works. His homeland honored him with the title "Shilpacharya" "Great teacher of the arts" for his artistic and visionary attributes. He was the pioneer of the modern art movement that took place in Bangladesh and was rightly considered by Syed Manzoorul Islam as the founding father of Bangladeshi modern arts, soon after Bangladesh earned the status of an independent republic.
Quamrul Hassan was a Bangladeshi artist. Hassan is referred to in Bangladesh as Potua, a word usually associated with folk artists, due to his down to earth style yet very modern in nature as he always added Cubism other than the folk style to his artworks. In addition to his artistic legacy, two of Hassan's work have come to be part of Bangladesh's political history. The first of this is a monstrous rendition of Yahya Khan, the Pakistani president who ordered genocide in Bangladesh. The second was just before his death, mocking the then dictator of Bangladesh, Hossain Mohammad Ershad. This sketch was titled Desh aaj bisshobeheyar khoppre.
Sheikh Mohammed Sultan, popularly known as S M Sultan, was a Bengali decolonial artist who worked in painting and drawing. His fame rests on his striking depictions of exaggeratedly muscular Bengali peasants engaged in the activities of their everyday lives. Sultan's early works were influenced by western technics and forms, particularly impressionism, however, in his later works particularly, works exhibited in 1976, we discover there is a constant temptation to decolonize his art technics and forms.
Tareque Masud was a Bangladeshi independent film director, film producer, screenwriter and lyricist. He first found success with the films Muktir Gaan (1995) and Matir Moina (2002), for which he won three international awards, including the International Critics' FIPRESCI Prize, in the Directors' Fortnight at 2002 Cannes Film Festival. The film became Bangladesh's first film to compete for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
The Cinema of Bangladesh is a diverse and vibrant entity, consisting of films produced across various regions, each contributing its unique linguistic and cultural perspective. Beyond the dominant Dhaka based Bengali-language film industry Dhallywood, which is a portmanteau of "Dhaka" and "Hollywood", Bangladesh is home to cinema in several other languages and dialects. For instance, Chakma cinema from Bandarban, Garo cinema from Sherpur, Meitei and Sylheti cinema from Sylhet, Chatgaiya cinema from Chattogram. These regional cinemas play a crucial role in preserving and promoting the linguistic and cultural heritage of the country. The dominant style of Bangladeshi cinema is melodramatic cinema, which developed from 1947 to 1990 and characterizes most films to this day. Cinema was introduced in Bangladesh in 1898 by the Bradford Bioscope Company, credited to have arranged the first film release in Bangladesh. Between 1913 and 1914, the first production company, Picture House, was opened. A 1928 short silent film titled Sukumari was the first Bengali-produced film in the region. The first full-length film, The Last Kiss, was released in 1931.
Matir Moina is a 2002 Bengali war-drama film written and directed by Tareque Masud. It was his debut feature film. Based on Tareque's story the screenplay was co-written by Tareque and Catherine Masud. In the film, Tareque's childhood experience is revealed against the backdrop of 1969 Mass uprising in East Pakistan on the eve of Bangladesh Liberation War. The film stars Nurul Islam Bablu, Russell Farazi, Jayanta Chattopadhyay, Rokeya Prachy, Soaeb Islam and Lameesa R. Reemjheem in the lead role. It is considered one of the best Bangladeshi films of 21st century.
Ahmed Sofa was a Bangladeshi writer, thinker, novelist, poet, philosopher and public intellectual. Sofa is considered by many, including National Professor Abdur Razzaq and Salimullah Khan, to be the most important Bengali Muslim writer after Mir Mosharraf Hossain and Kazi Nazrul Islam. A writer by occupation, Sofa wrote 18 non-fiction books, 8 novels, 4 collections of poems, 2 collections of short stories, and several books in other genres.
Abdus Shakoor is a Bangladeshi painter and calligrapher.
The Moviyana Film Society is one of the largest film culture oriented organisations in Bangladesh. It was established on 10 November 2006. It regularly arranges Film Screenings, Film Festivals, Film Appreciation course and other Film making related courses in different cities of Bangladesh. Film maker & Writer Belayat Hossain Mamun is the founder and incumbent president of this organization.
Hamiduzzaman Khan is a Bangladeshi artist and sculptor. He is well known as a sculptor for his theme and form oriented sculptures, in particular sculptures on the theme of Bangladesh War of Liberation and birds. Following the introduction of modernity in sculpture in Bangladesh in the 1950s by Novera Ahmed, Khan was instrumental in the popularization of sculpture in the country through his distinctive form of modernity. Influenced by Alberto Giacometti and Henry Moore, his works manifest expressionism, minimalism, and a constant exploration of purity of material. He worked on both figurative as well as abstract genres.
Akbar Hossain Pathan Dulu, known by the stage name Farooque, was a Bangladeshi actor, politician, businessman and producer. He was known as 'Mia Bhai' to mass people. He appeared in over 150 films in a career spanning more than five decades. Most of his films were commercially and critically successful. Farooque was one of the most recognizable stars of the classical and golden era of Bangladeshi film industry.
Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh are cases in which the Government of Bangladesh directly or indirectly kidnaps people and holds them incommunicado. According to a Dhaka-based human rights group Odhikar, at least 402 people have become victim of enforced disappearance from 2009 to 2017 under the former Awami League administration. These incidents along with extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh has been criticized by The United Nations and human rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), a special paramilitary unit in Bangladesh, is alleged to be behind most of these disappearances even though RAB claimed these allegations to be false, though evidence has comeforth that they were the ones behind these disappearances. The autocratic Awami League regime denies involvement in these forced disappearances even when victims later surface in custody.
Lieutenant Colonel (Dismissed) Tareque Sayeed Mohammad is a former Bangladeshi Army officer who was convicted in the Narayanganj Seven murder case. He was the commanding officer of Bangladesh elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-11. He is the Son in Law of former minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury.
Syeda Marium Gulshan Hossain is a painter and installation artist based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Her work has been exhibited extensively. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of the Department of Painting at University of Development Alternative Dhaka and is a member of the International Miniature Art Society of Florida, USA.
Kazi Anowar Hossain was a Bangladeshi painter who was known for his classical portrayal of rural Bengal. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2016 posthumously by the Government of Bangladesh.
Swatta is a 2017 Bangladeshi romantic tragedy film. The film directed by Hashibur Reza Kallol and produced by Sohani Hossain under the banner of Taranga Entertainment. It is a story written by Sohani Hossain and a screenplay and dialogue written by Ferdous Hassan. The film features Bangladeshi superstar Shakib Khan and Paoli Dam in the lead roles and Kabila, Nasreen, Rina Khan, Don and many have played supporting roles in the film.
Md Nazmul Haque Bappy is a Bangladeshi director, and painter. He has received several awards, including Berger Paints Award UNAIDS Grand Award, China Bangladesh Friendship Award, Grand Award in International Korean Art Festival, and Award in Art Are-China Exhibition.
Shonar Beri is a 1987 Bengali documentary film. Written and directed by Tareque Masud, the film was his directorial debut. The film was also the first video documentary and was an early attempt at dealing with gender issues in Bangladesh. It deals with the oppressed condition of women in Bangladesh, portraying everyday subordination of women under the Islamic regulation in Bangladeshi society.
The Painter Kazi Anowar Hossain Award was officially launched at the 23rd National Fine Art Exhibition, Bangladesh in 2019. This award is generally given every two years. In 2016, the government of Bangladesh awarded the posthumous Ekushey Padak to artist Kazi Anowar Hossain, the award’s namesake, for his contribution to the field of art and painting. This is a matter of surprise that he only painted boat from his childhood to his death. Father of the Bengali nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman affectionately used to call him Nauka Anowar means Boat Anowar in English. Bangladesh's national academy of Art launched this award in memory of this great painter.
Studio 6/6 is an art space, gallery and independent cultural venue based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Co-founded by Bangladeshi artist-printmaker Najib Tareque, Farhana Afroz Bappy and multilateral artist Taiara Farhana Tareque, the studio was launched in 2015.
