National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP), the largest and one of the most significant initiatives in automotive sector so far, represents a unique joining of hands between the Government of India, a number of state governments and Indian Automotive Industry to create a state of the art Testing, Validation and R&D infrastructure in the country.

The Project aims at creating core global competencies in Automotive sector in India and facilitate seamless integration of Indian Automotive industry with the world as also to position the country prominently on the global automotive map. [2] NATRiP aim to create a testing, validation and R&D infrastructure, had announced to invest Rs 1,718 crore for setting up of seven auto testing facilities at seven locations across India by 2011. [3] NATRIP is forging ahead at a fast pace on schedule. Currently, tenders worth more than Rs 1642.97 Cr have been floated and tenders worth around Rs 1403.98 crore have been finalized [4] The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in their meeting held on 27 July 2016 has approved the revised time lines and escalation of cost estimate of the project. Accordingly, now the revised cost estimates is Rs. 3727.30 crore with project completion date in June 2019. [5]

List of Test Centres

The facilities under NATRiP at Manesar, Chennai, VRDE Ahmednagar, ARAI Pune, Rae Bareilly, Silchar and Indore will provide comprehensive homologation and product testing and validation facilities for vehicles and components and will also foster global competencies for generic research and development geared to catapult India into the league of nations with automotive excellence. Region-wise Centres

As part of NATRIP, the following test centres have been finalised to set up the test facilities as described below: [7]

West centre
A full fledged testing and homologation facilities at ARAI, Pune and VRDE, Ahmednagar.
South Centre
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) – A full fledged testing and homologation centre.
North Centre
Manesar (Haryana) - A full-fledged testing and homologation centre within the northern hub of automotive industry.
World-class proving grounds
Testing tracks on approx 3000 acres of land at district Khandwa, in Madhya Pradesh, Having different types of world class testing tracks and India's biggest proving ground along with the electric vehicles battery testing facility and vehicle testing facility.

Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is a co-operative industrial research association by the automotive industry with the Ministry of Heavy Industries and the Government Of India. The objectives of the Association are Research and Development in automotive engineering for industry, product design and development, evaluation of automotive equipment and ancillaries, standardisation, technical information services, execution of advanced courses on the application of modern technology and conduct of specific tests.

Thrissur Ayurveda cluster is an Ayurveda cluster situated in KINFRA Park in Koratty in Thrissur District. The cluster is meant for a comprehensive development of Kerala brand of Ayurvedic products and train the manufacturers of Ayurveda products on the importance of safety, quality and efficacy. The cluster have facilities for testing and analysis, process product validation, safety study and manufacture. The cluster is approved by the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH).

JAI is an Indian multinational suspension system automotive company headquartered in Delhi, India. JAI produces various types of springs, including tapered or multileaf, parabolic spring, lift axle suspension, and air suspension systems. JAI manufacturing units are found in Yamuna Nagar, Malanpur, Chennai, Hosur, Rudrapur, and Jamshedpur. JAI products are sold in over 25 countries.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">International Centre for Automotive Technology</span>

International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT) is located at Manesar in Gurugram district of Haryana state of India. The Rs 1100 crore facility has facilities for vehicle homologation and also testing laboratories for noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and passive safety. It also includes a powertrain laboratory, engine dynamometers, emission laboratory with Euro-V capability, a fatigue laboratory, passive safety laboratory, and vehicle test tracks. iCAT is also being developed as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for component development and NVH.

The Automotive Industry Standards are the automotive technical specifications of India. They are based on the Central Motors Vehicles Regulations, 1989 (CMVR). All safety norms prescribed under the CMVR 1989 was based on the UN/European Regulations which are internationally accepted.Enforcement of provision of CMV Act and CMV Rules come under the purview of the State Governments/UTs.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Make in India</span> Government initiative to encourage manufacturing in India

Make in India is an initiative by the Government of India to create and encourage companies to develop, manufacture and assemble products made in India and incentivize dedicated investments into manufacturing. The policy approach was to create a conducive environment for investments, develop a modern and efficient infrastructure, and open up new sectors for foreign capital. The initiative targeted 25 economic sectors for job creation and skill enhancement, and aimed "to transform India into a global design and manufacturing export hub."

Global Automotive Research Center (GARC) is a unit under National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) housing the facilities for comprehensive testing services. GARC provides certification testing and R&D support to the automotive vehicle and component manufacturers in India. The GARC which is under construction is spread over 304 acres with combined office space and test labs at the SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre near Chennai at Oragadam. The center will have certification test facilities to conduct the performance testing of full range of automobile. The center will also have the center of excellence for Passive Safety, EMC and Automotive Infotronics.

AgniKul Cosmos Private Limited is an Indian aerospace manufacturer based in National Center for Combustion R&D (NCRD) of IIT Madras, Chennai. The start up aims to develop and launch its own small-lift launch vehicle such as the Agnibaan, capable of placing 100 kg (220 lb) payload into a 700 km (430 mi) orbit. The first commercial launch was expected in 2022. However, no launch happened in that year. The first suborbital mission will be conducted on 22 March 2024.

Omega Seiki Mobility is an Indian electric vehicle manufacturer that is developing its own line of commercial EVs primarily deployed with e-commerce for last-mile delivery. Headquartered in New Delhi, India, Omega Seiki serves as a separate business auto vertical of the Anglian Omega Group. The company's first vehicle - Rage+, was indigenously designed and developed in its manufacturing facility in Faridabad, Haryana. Launched in February 2020 at the Auto Expo 2020, Rage+ is claimed to be India's first smart electric cargo three-wheeler. Recently, the company also unveiled a refrigerated vehicle - Rage+ Frost that will assist in delivery of food and pharmaceuticals, particularly the COVID-19 vaccine. Going forward, Anglian is looking to invest US$300–600 million in its e-mobility venture as it is committed to build India's first global electric cargo company.

NATRAX, Khandwa, is Asia's longest and one of the high-speed state-of-the-art tracks in India for automotive testing and certification. It is the fifth largest track in the world.
