NFL Big Game Night is a combination game show and American football sports television presentation broadcast by Channel 5 and 5Action in the United Kingdom since 2025. The show is hosted by Dermot O'Leary.
Due to United Kingdom broadcasting regulations over the amount of advertising per hour, a standard simulcast of an American football broadcast from the United States from CBS or Fox cannot be broadcast without some additional content around it. Historically, broadcasts of the NFL on Sky Sports, or the NFL International Series on the BBC or ITV have featured an analysis portion during some periods when the US broadcaster has gone to commercials. For the 2025 season, the NFL partnered with Paramount Skydance (the league has owned a stake in Skydance, which acquired Paramount in 2025, since 2022) owned Channel 5 for the first primetime free to air weekly regular season game coverage in the country's history, with the broadcaster gaining the rights on a multi-year deal to two weekly Sunday games (a 1pm ET and 4:25ET game), the NFL International series games in London and Dublin, the Thanksgiving Day games and the Super Bowl. [1] With the intention of attempting to reach a family audience, the wraparound coverage around the early game (6PM in the UK) instead features a specific game show element, with two teams of four supporters (of the two teams playing in the telecast) competing in various challenges such as staying on a bucking bronco while catching footballs to win a trip to a NFL city in the United States in the studio during US commercial breaks. During the game show portions, the team captains are English former hockey player and Olympic gold medallist Sam Quek and two-time Super Bowl-winning defensive end with the New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora. [2] [3] The 4:25PM ET game (9:25PM in the UK) airs as a more traditional telecast on 5Action, branded as 5NFL for the period, and is hosted as a pair by Quek and Umenyiora, who handle the analysis of the game during breaks.
The format was widely panned during the first week of coverage by traditional UK NFL fans, comparing the production and hosting to the inept broadcaster comedic character Alan Partridge played by Steve Coogan with the ratings peaking at 220k but an average of 166k. [4]
