The National Defense University (MNDU) is an accredited Mongolian military university located in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. [4] Founded in 1921, it is the country's premier and oldest military educational institution. [5] The NDU prepares officers and NCOs alike to have grounded leadership skills, physical and moral strength and a high military and civilian education. [5]
It was established initially as the Commanders School of the Mongolian People's Army in September 1921 at the initiative of Damdin Sükhbaatar, who was a founding member of the Mongolian People's Party (MPP). The first leaders of the school was Soviet expert P. Mhalpinein and director L. Dzuzav, the Mongolian director. [6] The NDU has since operated under the follow names: [7]
In 1994, the MNDU maintained a border protection faculty, which would later be expanded to establish the Border Troops Institute and what would later become the Law Enforcement University of Mongolia. [8] Since 1998, the MNDU's international relations have been intensified, with some cadets at the university studying and/or training at military educational institutions such as the Military University of the Russian Defense Ministry, the United States Army War College, and the Turkish Military Academy. The "Temujin Urlug" Secondary School (Tajik : Тэмүжин Өрлөг бүрэн дунд сургууль) is a military lyceum of the armed forces. The school was established in 2010 and is the successor to the Sukhbaatar Officer's School, established on 1 October 1943. [12] It currently has 25 teachers and 202 students, and prepares future personnel for the Armed Forces. The school works with the Suvorov Military School in Yekaterinburg and Omsk in Russia, and the Military High School of Bulgaria. [13]
At the invitation of the Mayor of Angarsk, Irkutsk Oblast, students of the school marched in a Victory Day military ceremony in the city. [14]

Other than the material honors it has been given, it also has many other honors that are bestowed upon it. Every July, the NDU provides the armed forces standard color guard and the corps of drums in the Mongolian State Flag Day military parade on Sükhbaatar Square. In September 2015, cadets of the NDU took part in the China Victory Day Parade on Beijing's Chang'an Avenue. [16] The NDU holds its graduation ceremony in the presence of the President of Mongolia. The Mongolian Armed Forces is the collective name for the Mongolian military and the joint forces that comprise it. It is tasked with protecting the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Mongolia. Defined as the peacetime configuration, its current structure consists of five branches: the Mongolian Ground Force, Mongolian Air Force, Construction and Engineering Forces, cyber security, and special forces. In case of a war situation, the Border Troops, Internal Troops and National Emergency Management Agency can be reorganized into the armed forces structure. The General Staff of the Mongolian Armed Forces is the main managing body and operates independently from the Ministry of Defence, its government controlled parent body.
Damdin Sükhbaatar was a Mongolian communist revolutionary, founding member of the Mongolian People's Party, and leader of the Mongolian partisan army that took Khüree during the Outer Mongolian Revolution of 1921. For his part in the Outer Mongolian revolution of 1921, he was enshrined as the "Father of Mongolia's Revolution".
Sükhbaatar Square is the central square of Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar. The square was named for Mongolian's revolutionary hero Damdin Sükhbaatar after his death in 1923. The square's name was changed to Chinggis Square in 2013 in honor of Genghis Khan, considered the founding father of Mongolia, but the original name was restored in 2016. The center of the plaza features an equestrian statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, while a large colonnade monument dedicated to Genghis Khan, as well as to Ögedei Khan and Kublai Khan, dominates the square's north face directly in front of the Saaral Ordon.
The Mongolian Air Force is the aerial warfare service branch of the Mongolian Armed Forces.
The Order of Sukhbaatar is a state decoration of Mongolia, originally instituted on 16 May 1941. It was awarded to Mongolians and foreigners "for special services to defenses, economic and cultural construction of the Mongolian People's Republic, and also for acts of heroism in the struggle against external and internal enemies". It was named after the Mongolian national hero, Damdin Sükhbaatar. It is still conferred today and has been the highest state order since 1992, awarded by the decree of the President of Mongolia.
Men's and Soldiers' Day is a public holiday in Mongolia is celebrated on 18 March annually. Being the official holiday of the Mongolian Armed Forces, it is the equivalent of Defender of the Fatherland Day in Russia and/or the male version of International Women's Day.

The Ministry of Defence of Mongolia is a ministry of the Government of Mongolia. According to the Law on the Defence of Mongolia, the Ministry is responsible for developing Defence Policy, coordinating its political, economic, social, legal and military implementation, and exercise civilian control over the Mongolian Armed Forces. The current Minister Gürsediin Saikhanbayar was appointed in July 2020.
State Flag Day is the main state holiday in Mongolia, being celebrated annually on July 10. State Flag Day is celebrated with a central government-sponsored events including a military parade and a flag raising ceremony on Sükhbaatar Square in the capital of Ulaanbaatar.
The Military Band of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Mongolia is the main military band of the Armed Forces of Mongolia. The band was formed in 1950 and began as the foremost musical group of the Mongolian People's Army. It was led for over 30 years by Colonel Navaany Tserenpil who drastically changed the band's style and structure to reflect the Russian model. Tserenpil, who wrote over 100 marches for the band, is known as the Mongolian March King. Today, the MAF Band participates in receptions dedicated to state holidays, parades, and accompanies the visits of heads of state and government to Mongolia.
The Military Music College of Mongolia is a military music institution in the Mongolian National Defense University. It is designed to prepare cadets to become professional musicians for art organizations in the Armed Forces of Mongolia, such as the Mongolian Military Song and Dance Academic Ensemble. It was founded in 1991 by the Ministry of Defense following the fall of communism in Mongolia.
The National Security Council of Mongolia is a consultative body to the Office of the President of Mongolia. It focuses mainly on briefing high ranking national security and/or political figures on the state of internal and external threats in Mongolia. It also advises the President in his/her orders to the Mongolian Armed Forces under the Ministry of Defense and the National Police Agency under the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs. The NSC is affiliated with the larger Security and Foreign Policy Council and the Information and Analytical Council, the latter of which is composed of former politicians, military leaders, diplomats, and academics and intellectual experts.
The General Authority for Border Protection is an agency that is part of the Government of Mongolia and acts as a reserve force for the Armed Forces of Mongolia. It guards the country's entry and exit near Russia and China as well as prevents/suppresses illegal activities such as smuggling and human trafficking. It also is responsible for border patrol and the regulation of illegal immigration. The agency is support by over 3,000 personnel across 300-350 permanent border guard units from the Mongolian Armed Forces, the National Police Agency and other government agencies. It is currently an agency of the Mongolian Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs.
The Mongolian Military Museum also known as the Museum of the Mongolian Armed Forces, is located in northern Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. It explains Mongolian military history dating back to the Mongol Empire. It is currently located across from an army barracks. The museum is part of the Ministry of Defense.
The National Emergency Management Agency or NEMA is a paramilitary government agency overseeing emergency services in Mongolia. It was established with the duty to conduct nationwide post-disaster activities. It is similar to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. It is responsible for developing environmental legislation as well as managing the fall out from natural disasters and conducting rescue work.
The 084th Special Task Battalion, named after former Minister of Defense Lieutenant General Shagalyn Jadambaa and also known as the Parachute Special Forces Battalion is a military unit of the Armed Forces of Mongolia. It specializes in direct action unconventional warfare as well as air assault operations. It serves to engage in counter terrorism, counterinsurgency and special reconnaissance. It also conducts hostage rescue and provides security for high-level visitors and facilities.
Brigadier general Gürsediin Saikhanbayar is a Mongolian politician, public administration manager and military officer who has been the Minister of Defense of Mongolia since 2020. He is the 36th minister since the establishment of the ministry in 1911 and the 17th since the end of communism in 1990. He holds the rank of Brigadier General, awarded to him in 2016.
Colonel general Jamsrangijn Jondon was a Mongolian military leader and Minister of Defense of the Mongolian People's Republic from 1982 to 1989. Many of the reforms of the Mongolian People's Army from 1965 to 1989 were initiated by the general.
Lieutenant general Shagalyn Jadambaa was a Mongolian military leader and Minister of Defense of the Mongolian People's Republic from September 1990 to July 1996. He was a member of the Mongolian People's Party.
Ulaan Od is an organ under the Mongolian Ministry of Defense, and has an official designation as the official newspaper of the Mongolian Armed Forces. According to Mongolian cosmonaut and former defense minister Jügderdemidiin Gürragchaa, "Ulaan Od newspaper is understood to have contributed to the upbringing and development of many generations of men and to the development of the media sector." It is published bi-weekly by the Mongolian Defense Ministry.
