The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and commonly known as Rio 2016, was an international multi-sport event held from 5 to 21 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with preliminary events in some sports beginning on 3 August. Rio was announced as the host city at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 October 2009.

The 2020 Summer Paralympics are an upcoming major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee. Scheduled as the 16th Summer Paralympic Games, they are scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan between 24 August and 5 September 2021. Originally due to take place between 25 August and 6 September 2020. On 24 March 2020, the IOC and the Tokyo Organizing Committee officially announced that the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics would be postponed to 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the first time that the Paralympics has been postponed. They will still be publicly marketed as the 2020 Summer Paralympics, even with the change in scheduling to one year later. The new dates were later confirmed as 24 August to 5 September 2021.

Equestrian competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto were held from July 11 to 25 at the Caledon Equestrian Park in Palgrave. The cross-country portion of eventing took place at nearby Will O' Wind Farm, which is located in Mono. Due to naming rights the venue was known as the latter for the duration of the games. The Barra Olympic Park, originally the City of Sports Complex, is a cluster of nine sporting venues in Barra da Tijuca, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The park, which served as the Olympic Park for the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics, was originally built for the 2007 Pan American Games, consisting of three venues. The complex was later expanded to nine venues for the Olympics, two of which are temporary structures. The complex will later become the site of the Olympic Training Center, after the games conclude. Since the conclusion of the 2016 Summer Olympics, the Barra Olympic Park has since been abandoned and off-limits to tourists.
