The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and also known as Rio 2016, were an international multi-sport event held from 5 to 21 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with preliminary events in some sports beginning on 3 August. Rio was announced as the host city at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 October 2009.

A total of 5,633 athletes from 42 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 332 events in 34 sports and in 47 disciplines. During the Games, 95 new Pan American records were set; 2,196 medals were awarded; 1,262 doping control tests were performed and about 15,000 volunteers participated in the organization of the event, which was an Olympic qualification for 13 International Federations (IFs).

The Games marked the first time a Latin American and South American city hosted the event, the second Southern Hemisphere city and nation, the first one being the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, and also the first time a Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) country hosted the event. These Games saw the introduction of two new sports to the Paralympic program: canoeing and the paratriathlon.

The centre uses six venues used in the 2016 games in addition to a number of new facilities created in the Barra Olympic Park footprint. The centre became a campus of training facilities for Olympic and Paralympic athletes at the site of the former Nelson Piquet International Autodrome - Jacarepaguá as a legacy of the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2016 Summer Paralympics.

The venue was initially slated to host cycling events for the 2016 Summer Olympics, but was instead demolished in favour of the replacement Rio Olympic Velodrome, after the International Cycling Union (UCI) deemed the venue unsuitable for the games. The Olympic Aquatics Stadium now occupies the former site of the velodrome.

The complex was later expanded to nine venues for the Olympics, two of which are temporary structures. The complex will later become the site of the Olympic Training Center, after the games conclude. Since the conclusion of the 2016 Summer Olympics, the Barra Olympic Park has since been abandoned and off-limits to tourists.

As with a number of other venues in the Barra Olympic Park, Carioca Arena 1 was transformed after the games to become part of the Olympic Training Centre.

As with a number of other venues in the Barra Olympic Park, Carioca Arena 2 will be transformed after the games to become part of the Olympic Training Centre.

The venue hosted taekwondo and fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the judo and wheelchair fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Carioca Arena 3 was planned to be transformed into a sports high school after the Games.
