The Billie Jean King Cup is the premier international team competition in women's tennis, launched as the Federation Cup in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The name was changed to the Fed Cup in 1995, and changed again in September 2020 in honor of former World No. 1 Billie Jean King. The Billie Jean King Cup is the world's largest annual women's international team sports competition in terms of the number of nations that compete. The current chairperson is Katrina Adams.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the International Tennis Federation suspended Russia from Billie Jean King Cup competitions.

Routliffe won a major doubles title at the 2023 US Open partnering Gabriela Dabrowski. She became the second New Zealand woman to win a major in the Open Era, after Judy Connor won the women's doubles title at the 1979 Australian Open. Routliffe was a two-time NCAA doubles champion with Maya Jansen for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Jade Lewis is a former tennis player from New Zealand. She comes from a family of achievers in the sport. One uncle is 1983 Wimbledon Championships finalist Chris Lewis, and her father David and other uncle Mark competed for New Zealand's Davis Cup team. Her older sister Carolina, who died suddenly in September 2019, played tennis for West Virginia University and also competed in a handful of ITF tournaments.

They lost their first Fed Cup match against the Philippines with their first win being their 3-0 victory over Turkmenistan in their second Fed Cup game. Prior to their Fed Cup debut in 2020, Guam was previously affiliated with the Pacific Oceania team.
