The 1970 Federation Cup was the eighth edition of what is now known as the Fed Cup. 22 nations participated in the tournament, which was held at the Freiburg Tennis Club in Freiburg, West Germany from 19 to 24 May. Australia defeated West Germany in the final. [1]

United States defeated Australia in the final, in what was the fourth final featuring both teams.

The 1972 Federation Cup was the tenth edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. 31 nations participated in the tournament, which was held at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, South Africa from 20–25 March. South Africa defeated Great Britain in the final, in what was the first final not featuring United States or Australia, giving South Africa their first title. South Africa became the first team other than United States or Australia to win the Fed Cup.

The 1973 Federation Cup was the 11th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. 30 nations participated in the tournament, which was held at the Bad Homburg Tennis Club in Bad Homburg, West Germany from 30 April–6 May. Australia defeated South Africa in the final, winning the title without losing a rubber.

The 1975 Federation Cup was the 13th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. 31 nations participated in the tournament, which was held at the Aixoise C.C., Aix-en-Provence, France, from 5–11 May. Czechoslovakia defeated Australia in the final, giving Czechoslovakia their first title.

The 1976 Federation Cup was the 14th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. For the first time, enough teams entered to necessitate pre-qualifying rounds. The tiebreaker also was used for the first time. The tournament was held at The Spectrum in Philadelphia, United States, from 22 to 29 August. The United States defeated Australia in the final, in what was the sixth final between United States and Australia.

The 1977 Federation Cup was the 15th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club in Eastbourne, United Kingdom, from 13–18 June. The United States defended their title, defeating Australia in their seventh final.

The 1978 Federation Cup was the 16th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne, Australia, from 27 November – 3 December. The United States won their third consecutive title, defeating Australia in their eighth final.

The 1979 Federation Cup was the 17th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at the RSHE Club Campo in Madrid, Spain, from 30 April – 6 May. The United States won their fourth consecutive title, defeating Australia in their ninth final.

The 1980 Federation Cup was the 18th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at the Rot-Weiss Tennis Club in West Berlin from 19 to 25 May. The United States won their fifth consecutive title, defeating Australia in their tenth and record eighth consecutive final. The US did not drop a single match during the tournament.

The United States won their sixth consecutive title, defeating Great Britain in the final, in what was a rematch of the 1967 Federation Cup.

The tournament was held at the Albisguetli Tennis Club in Zürich, Switzerland from 17 to 24 July. Czechoslovakia won the title, defeating West Germany in the final, in what was the first final since 1972 that didn't involve United States or Australia.

The 1984 Federation Cup was the 22nd edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at the Esporte Clube Pinheiros in São Paulo, Brazil, from 15 to 22 July. Czechoslovakia successfully defended their title, defeating Australia in the final.

The 1985 Federation Cup was the 23rd edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at the Nagoya Green Tennis Club in Nagoya, Japan, from 6–14 October. Czechoslovakia defeated the United States in the final, giving Czechoslovakia their 4th and 3rd consecutive title.

The 1986 Federation Cup was the 24th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at I. Czech Lawn Tennis Club in Prague, Czechoslovakia, from 20 to 27 July. The United States defeated three-time defending champions Czechoslovakia in the final, giving the USA their 12th title. The finals marked Martina Navratilova's first return to Czechoslovakia since her defection to the United States in 1975.

The 1987 Federation Cup was the 25th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at Hollyburn Country Club in Vancouver, Canada, from 26 July – 2 August. West Germany won their first title, defeating the United States in the final. This was their first victory after four previous final appearances.

The 1988 Federation Cup was the 26th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at Flinders Park in Melbourne, Australia, from 4–11 December. Czechoslovakia defeated the Soviet Union in the final, giving Czechoslovakia their 5th title, and 4th in six years.

The 1989 Federation Cup was the 27th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at Ariake Tennis Forest Park in Tokyo, Japan, from 1–9 October. The United States won the tournament without losing a rubber, defeating Spain in the final, giving the USA their 13th title.

The 1990 Federation Cup was the 28th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. The tournament was held at the Peachtree World of Tennis in Peachtree Corners, GA, United States, from 21 to 29 July. The United States defeated the Soviet Union in the final, giving the USA their 14th and 2nd consecutive title.

The World Group was the highest level of Federation Cup competition in 1991. Thirty-two nations competed in a five-round knockout competition from 22 to 28 July. United States was the two-time defending champion, but Spain won the final to claim its first title.
