Ngodwana Biomass Power Station, also Sappi Ngodwana Biomass Power Station, is a 25 MW (34,000 hp) biomass-fired thermal power plant under development in South Africa. Ngodwana Energy Limited, a South African independent power producer was awarded the concession to design, finance, construct, operate and maintain the power station. [1]

Location

The power plant is under construction in the town of Ngodwana, in Ehlanzeni District, in Mpumalanga Province. Ngodwana is located approximately 44 kilometres (27 mi), by road, southwest of Mbombela, the provincial capital. [2] This is approximately 298 kilometres (185 mi) northeast of Johannesburg, the commercial and financial capital of South Africa. [3] The power station is located adjacent to the Sappi Ngodwana Paper Mill in Mpumalanga, South Africa, about 50 kilometres (31 mi), west of Mbombela. [4]

Overview

In April 2018, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract was awarded to a consortium comprising (a) ELB Engineering Services (Pty) Limited (b) KC Cottrell Company Limited and (c) ELB Educational Trust. [4]

The power station will use bio-waste from the adjacent wood and paper mill to boil water and produce steam. The steam will drive turbines of generate electricity. The waste gases from burning wood will be treated to remove pollutants, contaminants and carcinogens, before release into the atmosphere. [4]

The power generated will be evacuated along a high voltage transmission line to a substation where the power will be integrated into the national power grid. The South African state-owned utility company Eskom, will purchase the power under a long-term power purchase agreement. A biomass storage unit will be constructed as part of this project. [1]

Construction costs and timeline

The total cost for the power plant is estimated at US$89 million. Of that, US$66.75 million (75 percent) will be borrowed from Absa Bank Limited and Nedbank Limited. The remaining US$22.25 million (25 percent) will be raised by the power station owners. [1]

In April 2018, it was estimated that construction would take 27 months from start to commercial commissioning. [4]

The start up of the power plant was in March 2022.

Ayebo Biomass Power Station, also Biovéa Biomass Power Station, is a 46 MW (62,000 hp) biomass-fired thermal power plant under development in Ivory Coast. Biovéa Énergie SA, a special purpose vehicle company, has been awarded the concession contract to design, finance, construct, operate and maintain the power station. As raw material, the power station is designed to use palm oil waste.

Bangweulu Solar Power Station (BSPS), is a 54 MW (72,000 hp) solar power plant in Zambia. The solar farm that was commercially commissioned in March 2019, was developed and is owned by a consortium comprising Neoen, a French IPP, Industrial Development Corporation of Zambia, a government parastatal company and First Solar, a US-based solar panel manufacturer. The power station cost US$60 million to develop.

Kabu 16 Hydroelectric Power Station is a 20 megawatts (27,000 hp) hydroelectric power station under construction in Burundi. It is under development by the government of Burundi, with funding from the Exim Bank of India. Construction began in March 2019.

The Kangnas Wind Power Station is an operational 140 MW (190,000 hp) wind power plant in South Africa. The power station was developed and is owned by a consortium of international IPPs and financiers. Commercial operations started in November 2020. The energy generated at this wind farm is sold to the South African national electricity utility company Eskom, under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

The Exxaro Solar Power Station, also Lephalale Solar Power Station, is a planned 80 MW (110,000 hp) solar power plant in South Africa. The solar farm is under development by Cennergi, a subsidiary of Exxaro Resources Limited, a South African multinational mining group, active in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. The energy generated here will be sold to Exxaro Coal Plc, for use in their coal mine at Grootegeluk, under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), between the two Exxaro subsidiaries. The expected benefits to the group include (a) reduction of the group's carbon footprint (b) financial savings on energy acquisition and utilization and (c) to provide green, secure and sustainable electricity for mine operations at Grootegeluk Coal Mine.

The Caraculo Solar Power Station is a planned 50 MW (67,000 hp) solar power plant in Angola. The power station is in the planning stage, by a consortium comprising Eni, the Italian energy multinational, in collaboration with Sonangol, the Angolan energy parastatal.

The Harava Solar Power Station, is a 20 megawatts (27,000 hp) solar power plant under construction in Zimbabwe. The project is owned and under development by Harava Solar Limited and entity owned by the Seke Community, in partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe. The energy generated here will be purchased by Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

Bio2Watt Malmesbury Thermal Power Station is a 4.8 MW (6,400 hp) biogas-fired thermal power plant under development in South Africa. Bio2Watt, a South African company, entirely owned by Black women, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply 4.8 megawatts of electricity to South African Breweries (SAB) for use in their brewery near Cape Town. As raw material, the power station is designed to start with animal manure and urine, produced by 7,000 head of cattle at Morester's Vyvlei Dairy Farm. These will be supplemented by other organic waste, collected from farms and businesses in the nearby town of Malmesbury. The raw material will be digested anaerobically to produce industrial-grade biogas. The biogas will then be ignited to produce heat. That heat will be used to turn electric generators and produce electricity.

The Karoshoek Solar One Power Station, also Karoshoek Concentrated Solar Power Station, is a 100 megawatts concentrated solar power plant in South Africa. The solar component of this power station comprises curved mirrors that heat a fluid to a high temperature. The hot fluid is used to heat water, creating steam. The steam then "drives a steam turbine to convert the energy into electricity". That part of the power station is complemented by molten salt thermal storage technology, which "allows five hours of energy storage, enabling the plant to continue producing electricity in the absence of sunlight", supplying energy during South African peak hours. The consortium that owns the solar farm comprises foreign and domestic independent power producers (IPPs) and local and international financiers and other investors. A 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), between the owners and Eskom, the South African electric utility company, governs the sale of the generated energy to Eskom, the off-taker. The power station achieved commercial commissioning in November 2018.

The Omburu Solar Power Station, is a 20 megawatts solar power station in Namibia. The power station, which was developed and is owned by Namibia Power Corporation (Proprietary) Limited (NamPower), was constructed between March 2021 and June 2022 and was commercially commissioned on 24 June 2022. NamPower integrates the energy generated here, calculated at 67.8 GWh annually, into the Namibian grid. This is the first grid-connected PV solar power station, fully owned and operated by NamPower.

The Rosh Pinah Wind Power Station, is a planned 40 MW wind-power plant in Namibia. The wind farm is under development by Namibia Power Corporation Limited (NamPower), the Namibian electricity parastatal company. This wind farm is intended to increase Namibia's energy generation mix. An environmental impact assessment study by the consulting firm Enviro Dynamics, has been ongoing since 2020 and will inform the management of this renewable energy project.

The De Wildt Solar Power Station, is a 50 MW solar power station in South Africa. The power station was developed as is owned by a consortium of five South African independent power producers (IPPs) and investment firms. The energy generated here is sold directly to Eskom, the national electricity utility parastatal company, for integration into the South African grid. A 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) between the solar farm owners and Eskom governs the sale and purchase of electricity between the two.

The Sirius 1 Solar Power Station, is an 86 MW solar power station in South Africa. The power station was developed by a joint venture between Aurora Power Solutions and Sirius Solar PV Project One. The off-taker of the energy generated here is Eskom Holdings, the South African national electricity utility parastatal company. A 20-year power purchase agreement between Eskom and the owners of the power station, governs the purchase and sale of electricity between the two. Commercial commissioning was achieved in February 2020.
