The United States secretary of transportation is the head of the United States Department of Transportation. The secretary serves as the principal advisor to the president of the United States on all matters relating to transportation. The secretary is a statutory member of the Cabinet of the United States,and is fourteenth in the presidential line of succession.

Bike lanes (US) or cycle lanes (UK) are types of bikeways (cycleways) with lanes on the roadway for cyclists only. In the United Kingdom,an on-road cycle-lane can be firmly restricted to cycles or advisory. In the United States,a designated bicycle lane or class II bikeway (Caltrans) is always marked by a solid white stripe on the pavement and is for 'preferential use' by bicyclists. There is also a class III bicycle route,which has roadside signs suggesting a route for cyclists,and urging sharing the road. A class IV separated bike way (Caltrans) is a bike lane that is physically separate from motor traffic and restricted to bicyclists only.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is a division of the United States Department of Transportation that specializes in highway transportation. The agency's major activities are grouped into two programs,the Federal-aid Highway Program and the Federal Lands Highway Program. Its role had previously been performed by the Office of Road Inquiry,Office of Public Roads and the Bureau of Public Roads.
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act was enacted in the United States in 1966 to empower the federal government to set and administer new safety standards for motor vehicles and road traffic safety. The Act was the first mandatory federal safety standards for motor vehicles. The Act created the National Highway Safety Bureau. The Act was one of a number of initiatives by the government in response to increasing number of cars and associated fatalities and injuries on the road following a period when the number of people killed on the road had increased 6-fold and the number of vehicles was up 11-fold since 1925. The reduction of the rate of death attributable to motor-vehicle crashes in the United States represents the successful public health response to a great technologic advance of the 20th century—the motorization of the United States.
Transportation safety in the United States encompasses safety of transportation in the United States,including automobile crashes,airplane crashes,rail crashes,and other mass transit incidents,although the most fatalities are generated by road incidents annually killing 32,479 people in 2011 to over 42,000 people in 2022. The number of deaths per passenger-mile on commercial airlines in the United States between 2000 and 2010 was about 0.2 deaths per 10 billion passenger-miles. For driving,the rate was 150 per 10 billion vehicle-miles:750 times higher per mile than for flying in a commercial airplane. For a person who drives a million miles in a lifetime this amounts to a 1.5% chance of death.

This makes motor vehicle collisions the leading cause of death among young adults of 15–29 years of age and the ninth most frequent cause of death for all ages worldwide. He served as the president and CEO of GE Energy Financial Services,a unit of General Electric (GE) from 2013 to 2018. Previously at GE,he was the Chief Regulatory Officer and Compliance Leader at GE Capital. Nason is one of 190 GE officers globally. From 2005–2009 he served as Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions under Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson,during which time he was a key architect of the federal government's response to the financial crisis of 2008.

Ann E. Carlson is an American attorney and legal scholar who served as the acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from September 2022 to December 2023. Before joining the Biden administration,Carlson was the Shirley Shapiro Professor of Environmental Law at the UCLA School of Law,where she also served as faculty co-director of the Emmett Center on Climate Change and the Environment. She is an expert on U.S. environmental law and policy with a particular focus on climate change and environmental federalism. Biden administration withdrew her from nomination in May 2023.
Mark Rosekind served as the 15th Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). He was appointed by President Obama and sworn in in December 2014,replacing David L. Strickland who resigned in January 2014. NHTSA was run by David J. Friedman,the deputy administrator,in the intervening time.
Robert E. Farris was sworn in as Federal Highway Administrator on June 8,1988,after serving as the FHWA's Deputy Federal Highway Administrator from August 1986.
Paul Trombino III is an American engineer and government official. He served as director of the Iowa Department of Transportation from 2011 to 2016. Trombino was nominated by President Donald Trump to become Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA),but withdrew in December 2017.

Brandye Hendrickson was named Deputy Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration on July 24,2017,after having been Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation. She also became Acting Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration until Nicole Nason was confirmed by the Senate. On July 19,2019,Brandye left her position to take another Deputy position as American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
The green transport hierarchy (Canada),street user hierarchy (US),sustainable transport hierarchy (Wales),urban transport hierarchy or road user hierarchy is a hierarchy of modes of passenger transport prioritising green transport. It is a concept used in transport reform groups worldwide and in policy design. In 2020,the UK government consulted about adding to the Highway Code a road user hierarchy prioritising pedestrians. It is a key characteristic of Australian transport planning.
