Nizamuddin Azami (Urdu :نظامالدیناعظمی;November 1910 –26 February 2000) was an Islamic scholar who served as the twelfth and last Grand Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband. He made contributions in Islamic jurisprudence,and his works include Muntakhabat-e-Nizām al-Fatāwa,a collection of selected fatwas he wrote during his tenure at Deoband.
Nizamuddin Azami was born in 1910 in Undra,Azamgarh district. [1] He belonged to a lineage of scholars and had a strong inclination towards religious education from a young age. [2] His father Muhammad Rafi was a Zamindar. [3] Despite initial encouragement to pursue modern education,he expressed his desire to acquire religious knowledge. [4] He began his studies at Madrasa Ihyaul Uloom in Mubarakpur,Azamgarh,where he had the opportunity to learn from renowned teachers,including Shah Wasiullah. After completing his initial education,Nizamuddin Azami continued his studies at Madrasa Aziziya in Bihar Sharif and then at Madrasa Aliya Fatehpuri in Delhi. He eventually joined the Darul Uloom Deoband,where he completed the Dawra-e Hadith in 1933. [5] His teachers included Shukrullah Mubarakpuri,Hussain Ahmed Madani,Asghar Hussain Deobandi,Izaz Ali Amrohi,Muhammad Ibrahim Balyawi,and Muhammad Shafi Deobandi. [6]
After completing his education,Nizamuddin Azami taught at various madrasas. He served as a teacher at Madrasa Jami'ul Uloom in Jatinpur, [7] Azamgarh for five years,followed by Madrasa Jami'ul Uloom Dhamal in Gorakhpur for three years. [4] He then went to Darul Uloom Mau on the recommendation of his spiritual guide,Shah Wasiullah,and spent twenty-five years teaching and issuing fatwas (legal opinions) there.
In 1965,Nizamuddin Azami joined Darul Uloom Deoband as a Mufti (a scholar qualified to issue fatwas) and served there until his death on February 26,2000. He was known for his expertise in resolving contemporary issues and applying Islamic principles through Qiyas (analogical reasoning) and Ijtihad (independent legal reasoning). [8] His students included Abdul Haq Azmi,Mujahidul Islam Qasmi,Nizamuddin Asir Adrawi and Khalid Saifullah Rahmani. [9]
He authored around 75,000 responses to queries,stored in 125 extensive registers,with a separate register dedicated to the compilation of the most significant fatwas. [10] His most notable work is the compilation Muntakhabat-e-Nizām al-Fatāwa,which contains selected fatwas he wrote during his time at Darul Uloom Deoband. Mujahidul Islam Qasmi supervised its publication. Two volumes of his fatwas were published by the Islamic Fiqh Academy in New Delhi,while the Islamic Fiqh Academy Publications later published an expanded version in three volumes. [8] He edited and published the book Fath al-Rahman fi Ithbāt Madhab al-Nu'man by 'Abd al-Haqq al-Dehlawi. [8] He also authored several works on Hadith,Fiqh,and other subjects,including Aqsaamul Ahaadith,Osulul Hadith,Assan Ilmus-sarf,Assan Ilmun-Nahu,Sirajul Waritheen Sharhu Siraji,Mazaya Imam Azam,among others. The Darul Uloom Deoband is an Islamic seminary in India at which the Sunni Deobandi Islamic movement began. Uttar Pradesh-based Darul Uloom is one of the most important Islamic seminaries in India and the largest in the world. It is located in Deoband,a town in Saharanpur district,Uttar Pradesh. The seminary was established by Muhammad Qasim Nanautavi,Fazlur Rahman Usmani,Sayyid Muhammad Abid and others in 1866. Mahmud Deobandi was the first teacher and Mahmud Hasan Deobandi was the first student.
Muhammad Rafi Usmani was the Grand Mufti of Pakistan who served as the third president of Darul Uloom Karachi. He was an alumnus of Darul Uloom Deoband,University of the Punjab and the Darul Uloom Karachi. He authored books including Ahkām-e-Zakāt,Al-Tālīqāt al-nāfi'ah alāfath al-mulhim,Islām mai aurat ki hukmrāni and Nawādir al-Fiqh. He was a syndicate member of the University of Karachi,vice-president and a member of the executive council of Wifaq-ul-Madaris. His brother Muhammad Taqi Usmani is also a senior scholar.
Manazir Ahsan Gilani was an Indian Sunni Islamic scholar and former Dean of the Faculty of Theology at Osmania University. Some of his notable works include Tadwin-e-Hadith,Muqaddama Tadwin-e-Fiqh,Sawanih-e-Abu Dharr Ghifari,and Sawanih-e-Qasmi. Muhammad Hamidullah,a historian and hadith researcher,was among his students.
Mujahidul Islam Qasmi was an Indian Mufti,Qadhi and Islamic scholar,founder of Islamic Fiqh Academy. He served as the President of All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
Syed Fakhruddin Ahmad (1889-1972) was an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar and jurist who served as the Principal of Madrasa Shahi,and the sixth President of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind. He was a professor of hadith at the Darul Uloom Deoband.
Izaz Ali Amrohi was an Indian Islamic scholar who served as the second and ninth Grand Mufti of the Darul Uloom Deoband. His book Nafahtul Arab is taught in madrassas including the Darul Uloom Deoband.
Abdul Haq Azmi was an Indian Islamic scholar who was a senior professor of hadith at the Darul Uloom Deoband. He was an alumnus of Darul Uloom Mau and Darul Uloom Deoband. His students included Mahmood Madani,Mohammad Najeeb Qasmi and Noor Alam Khalil Amini.
Saeed Ahmad Palanpuri,was an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar and author who served as Shaykh al-Hadith and Principal of Darul Uloom Deoband. A number of his books are required readings in Darul Uloom Deoband.
Muhammad Sahool Bhagalpuri was an Indian Muslim scholar and jurist who served as the fifth Grand Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband.
Zafeeruddin Miftāhi was an Indian Muslim scholar and jurist who served as a Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband and the second president of Islamic Fiqh Academy. He compiled the religious verdicts of Azizur Rahman Usmani,called the Fatāwa Darul Uloom Deoband in twelve volumes and wrote books including Islām Ka Nizām-e-Masājid,Islām Ka Nizām Iffat-o-Asmat and Tārīkh-e-Masājid.
Habībur Rahmān Khairābadi is an Indian Muslim scholar and jurist who serves as a Mufti at the Darul Uloom Deoband. He is an alumnus of Darul Uloom Mau,Mazahir Uloom and the Aligarh Muslim University. He has authored books including The Rules of Slaughter and The Importance of Zakat. He signed the Darul Uloom Deoband's first ever religious edict against terrorism in 2008.
Khalid Saifullah Rahmani is an Indian Muslim scholar,author and jurist who serves as the fifth president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. He is the general secretary of Islamic Fiqh Academy of India. He has authored books including The Islamic Jurisprudence:Introduction and Codification and Kitāb-ul-Fatāwa.
Deobandi fiqh is a school of Islamic jurisprudence that is based on the Wahabism of Islamic law. Nematullah Azami,also written as Nematullah Azmi and Ni'matullah Azami,is an Indian Islamic hadith scholar,a commentator on the Quran (mufassir),and a faqīh. He is the president of India's Islamic Fiqh Academy. He has also been serving as a senior lecturer at Darul Uloom Deoband for forty years.
Ishtiaque Ahmad Qasmi is an Indian Islamic scholar,mufti,and writer. He has been serving as a teacher at Darul Uloom Deoband since 2008. He is an alumnus of Darul Uloom Deoband and Maulana Azad National Urdu University.
Muhammadullah Khalili Qasmi is an Indian Islamic scholar,mufti,writer,and trilingual translator of Urdu,Arabic,and English. He is an alumnus of Darul Uloom Deoband,Markazul Maarif,Jamia Millia Islamia,Maulana Azad National Urdu University,and Jamia Hamdard;and has written several books in English,Urdu,and Arabic.
Mahdi Hasan Shahjahanpuri (1882–1976),also known as Mufti Mehdi Hasan and Mahdi Hasan Gilani Qadri,was an Indian Islamic scholar and mufti. He served as grand mufti at Darul Uloom Deoband for twenty years. He was an alumnus of Madrasa Aminia and Darul Uloom Deoband. He was a student of Mahmud Hasan Deobandi and Kifayatullah Dehlawi. Along with jurisprudence,he also had access to hadith and biographical evaluation. His literary works include Rijāl-u-Kitāb al-Āthār,Sharh-u-Balāghāt-i-Muhammad FīKitāb al-Āthār,Al-la'ali al-Masnoo'ah fīal-Riwāyāti al-Marjoo'ah,and a critical commentary on certain ideas of Ibn Hazm in the Science of Hadith entitled As-Sayf al-mujalla 'ala al-Muḥalla. He has done research and commentary work on Muhammad al-Shaybani's two books,Kitab al-Hujjah AlāAhl al-Madīnah and Kitab al-Āthār.
Abdullah Maroofi is an Indian Islamic scholar,mufti,and writer who specialises in Hadith studies. Since 2001,he has been serving as a lecturer in the department of specialisation in Hadith at Darul Uloom Deoband and is currently the supervisor of the department.
Habibur Rahman Azami,also written as Habibur Rahman Qasmi Azmi,was an Indian Islamic scholar,writer,and expert in the field of biographical evaluation of hadith narrators. He served as a professor of hadith at Darul Uloom Deoband. He served as the 6th editor-in-chief of Monthly Darul Uloom. He authored several books,including Shuyukh al-Imam Abi Dawud al-Sijistani fīKitab al-Sunan,Tazkirah Ulama-e-Azamgarh,Ajodhya ke Islami Aathar,and Babri Masjid:Haqaiq aur Afsanay.
