Oazu Nantoi (born 3 February 1948) is a Moldovan politician and political analyst serving as member of Parliament of Moldova since 2019. [1]
Oazu Nantoi was born to Orthodox Christian Romanian parents from the Vanchikivtsi village in the Hotin County,Romania. However,Nantoi himself was born during the Soviet period. According to the Soviet policy regarding most ethnic Romanians living in the USSR,he was registered as ethnic Moldovan. His birth certificate is in Ukrainian as,following the Allied victory in WW II,the Soviets had annexed and incorporated the region in Ukrainian SSR. While in high school,Nantoi's mother was into Indian epic literature and decided that when she got married and had a son,she would name him Oazu. Nantoi's father was the school master and his mother was a teacher with the local village school. His father,due to some conflicts at work,moved in 1964 to a school in another village where he worked one year. As of 1965,at the age of 36,he moved to Chișinău,did the postgraduate studies,and studied the CPSU history. In 1965,Oazu with his mother joined him in Chișinău. When the Pedagogical Institute was re-established,his father got the position of the dean of the Department of Philology. He accepted it yet requested to be offered an apartment. The request was granted,and his family joined him in Chișinău. While studying at Polytechnic Institute,Oazu was selected in the parachuting team of Moldova. After a pause of 31 years,since 2004,he resumed jumping with parachute. He was not a member of the Communist Party of Moldova. In 1970,he graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Chișinău. He worked at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. [2]
In 1990-1991,he was the deputy Director general of the „Moldova-Press”Agency. In 1991-1992,he was the Head of the Policy Analysis Department within the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova. In 1995-1998,he was the Director of the Enterprise „Euro-alco”. Since 2000 by now,he is the Program Director in Conflicts Management at the Institute of Public Policies. In 1992-1994 and 1996-1998 the member of the Board of the Soros Foundation of Moldova. [3]
On October 13,1989,he was elected as deputy president of the Board of the Popular Front of Moldova. On 13 May 1990 Oazu Nantoi created the Social Democratic Party (Moldova). In 2009-2010,he was an MP in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova from the Democratic Party side. Nantoi has been proposed as a candidate in the Moldovan presidential election,2011–2012. [4]
In March 2015,he stacked to the Iurie Leancă party, [5] European People's Party of Moldova,and became the candidate of the electoral block "European People’s Platform of Moldova –Iurie Leancă" for the position of the general mayor of Chișinău municipality. At the local elections held on Jun 14,2015,Oazu Nantoi has gathered 10,18% of the votes,being listed at the 3rd place in the first round of elections,after Dorin Chirtoacă and Zinaida Greceanîi,and thus,did not manage to enter into the second round of elections.
In 2015,he participated in establishing of the Civil Platform „Dignity and Truth”. [6] He was elected member of Parliament of Moldova in the 2019 parliamentary election running as independent within the ACUM Electoral Bloc. [7] [8] [9]
Oazu Nantoi is married and has two children,Sergiu (born on October 13,1973) and Gheorghe. [10]
Cahul is a city and municipality in southern Moldova. The city is the administrative center of Cahul District; it also administers one village, Cotihana. As of 2014 census, the city has a population of 30,018.
The unification of Moldova and Romania is a popular concept and hypothetical unification in the two countries that began during the Revolutions of 1989. The Romanian Revolution in 1989 and the independence of Moldova in 1991 further contributed to the development of a movement for the unification of the two Romanian-speaking countries. The question of reunification is recurrent in the public sphere of the two countries, often as a speculation, both as a goal and a danger. Though historically Romanian support for unification was high, a March 2022 survey following the Russian invasion of Ukraine indicated that only 11% of Romania's population supports an immediate union, while over 42% think it is not the right moment.

Vladimir Plahotniuc, commonly referred to as Vlad Plahotniuc, is a Moldovan politician and oligarch and the vice president of the parliament of Moldova in 2010-2013. He was the chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova and previously was a member of the Parliament of Moldova for three terms, and served as First Vice President of the Parliament of Moldova. Until leaving the territory of the Republic of Moldova in 2019, he was considered to be the powerhouse of Moldovan politics in matters of influence, controlling Moldova's government and parliamentary majority. Since fleeing Moldova in June 2019, Plahotniuc has resided in Turkey.

Maia Sandu is a Moldovan politician who has been president of Moldova since 24 December 2020. She is the founder and former leader of the Party of Action and Solidarity and was prime minister of Moldova from 8 June 2019 until 14 November 2019, when her government collapsed after a vote of no-confidence. Sandu was minister of education from 2012 to 2015 and member of the parliament of Moldova from 2014 to 2015, and again in 2019.
Ilan Shor is an Israeli-born Moldovan pro-Russian oligarch and politician. Shor was a key figure in the 2014 Moldovan bank fraud scandal, where approximately $1 billion was transferred out of Moldovan banks for loans that would not be repaid, resulting in a total loss equivalent to 12% of Moldova's GDP and the arrest of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat. In June 2017, he was sentenced to 7.5 years of prison in absentia for fraud and money laundering and on 14 April 2023 his sentence was increased to 15 years. All of Shor's Moldovan assets were also frozen. After spending time under house arrest he fled to Israel in 2019, where he lived until 2024. He resides in Russia, a country whose citizenship he received in 2024.
Parliamentary elections were held in Moldova on 24 February 2019 in order to elect the 101 members of the Parliament of Moldova. The Constitution holds that elections are to be held no later than four years and three months from the date of inauguration of the previous legislature. The elections were held under a parallel voting system, replacing the closed-list proportional system used in Moldova at all previous parliamentary elections since the independence. The electoral campaign period began in November 2018 and continued up until the election day. Candidates from four parties were elected to the Parliament, more specifically the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), the ACUM electoral alliance composed of the DA and the PAS, and the Șor Party. The Party of Communists (PCRM) failed to obtain any seats for the first time since the independence of the Republic of Moldova. The results were subsequently confirmed and validated by Moldova's Constitutional Court on 9 March 2019. Furthermore, the results triggered a constitutional crisis in June.

Its members are the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) and the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM).
Action 2012, officially Unionist Platform Action 2012 or Civic Platform Action 2012, is a coalition of non-governmental organizations striving for the unification of Moldova and Romania operating in both Moldova and Romania. It was established on 17 April 2011, bringing together more than 30 unionist NGOs from Romania, Moldova, the United States and several other European countries. Action 2012 takes its name from the year 2012, which marked the 200th anniversary of the annexation of Bessarabia by the Russian Empire away from the Romanian principality of Moldavia. The coalition was founded by George Simion, then a Romanian activist who later became a politician.
On 18 September 2022, protests in Moldova began in the capital city of Chișinău, demanding the resignation of the country's pro-Western government, amid an energy crisis causing rising natural gas prices and inflation, caused in part by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
