Oksibil is a town and a district of Highland Papua in Indonesia that is also the administrative centre of the Pegunungan Bintang Regency. According to the 2010 census the district had a population of 4,087 inhabitants and on 2018 it increased to 4,566. [1] [2] The town is divided into eight villages (desa), with most populated one being Mabilabol with population of 1,460 in 2018 and the least populated one is Molbib Silibib with only 70 people living there according to Statistics Indonesia. [2] Sex ratio in the district as of 2018 was 147 men for every 100 women. Other than being the most populated, Mabilabol is also the most densely populated village. [2]

Infrastructure

There are four elementary schools, two junior high schools, and two senior high schools in the district as of 2018. Healthcare infrastructure in the district consisted of one hospital, two puskesmas, and one healthcare center. There's one mosque, eight protestant churches, and two Catholic churches in the district as of 2018. [2] A hydroelectric plant and a solar panel plant was built in 2012 to serve electricity needs in the town. It is the highest-located solar farm in the world, located between 3,000 meters above sea level. [3] [4] The town also has one university, Okmin University, which is private. [5]

Total roads inside the district is 139 kilometers, out of which 31.86 have not yet been paved with asphalt. The district is served by Oksibil Airport. [2] The district is connected to main cities in Papua such as Merauke and Wamena through Trans-Papua Highway. [6] However, the roads weren't fully paved and only partially finished due to frequent disturbance by armed groups under Free Papua Movement. The construction was halted in 2020 after a construction truck was shot by an armed group. [7]

Geography

The entire district has an area of 248 square kilometers. The district is located within average height of 1,411 meters above the sea but also includes places as high as 3,000 meters above sea level. [2]

Oksibil has a very wet Tropical rainforest climate (Af). Average annual temperature is 20.6 °C and its rainfall is 5385 mm.

Surya Citra Televisi (SCTV) is an Indonesian free-to-air television network. It was launched on 24 August 1990 in Surabaya, East Java as Surabaya Centra Televisi, broadcasting to the city and its surrounding area. At first, the programming was similar to that of RCTI, broadcasting foreign shows and some of RCTI news programs until they could produce their own. Gorontalo is a city and the capital of the Gorontalo Province, Sulawesi, Indonesia. The city has an area of 79.59 km2 and had a population of 179,991 at the 2010 census and 198,539 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 201,350. Pegunungan Bintang Regency or Bintang Mountains Regency is a regency in the Indonesian province of Highland Papua. It was created on 11 December 2002 from the north-eastern districts of Jayawijaya Regency. It covers an area of 15,683 km2, and had a population of 65,434 at the 2010 Census and 77,872 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 78,466 - comprising 42,362 males and 36,104 females. The administrative centre is the town of Oksibil.

Yetfa and Biksi are dialects of a language spoken in Jetfa District, Pegunungan Bintang Regency, Highland Papua, Indonesia, and across the border in Papua New Guinea. It is a trade language spoken in Western New Guinea up to the PNG border.

Eipo (Eipomek), or Lik, is a Mek language of the eastern highlands of Eipumek District, Pegunungan Bintang Regency, Highland Papua. It spoken by the Eipo people who live along the Eipo River. A large percentage of its vocabulary is shared with Una and Tanime, and they form one dialect area.

Trigana Air Flight 267 was a scheduled passenger flight from Sentani to Oksibil in the eastern Indonesian province of Papua. On 16 August 2015, the ATR 42 turboprop operating the service crashed on approach in the Bintang highlands region of Oksibil, killing all 49 passengers and 5 crew members.

The Trans-Papua Highway refers to 12 road segments, some under construction, across Western New Guinea in Indonesia, located in the island of New Guinea. The roads stretch from Sorong to Merauke with a total length of 4,325 km (2,687 mi). As of March 2017, 3,850 km (2,390 mi) of roads had been completed and construction on all the roads was predicted to finish in 2018, but construction was delayed in late 2018 due to armed conflict.

Operation Cartenz's Peace, formerly Operation Nemangkawi, is a joint-operation conducted by Indonesian National Armed Forces and Indonesian National Police to curb armed separatist rebels in Papua. According to Papua Regional Police head, Mathius Fakhiri, there are currently six active separatist groups located mainly in Papua highlands. While there are two groups which became less active or retired after Operation Nemangkawi. Tinggi Nambut faction under Goliath Tabuni were beaten in October 2018, and 10 members were subdued by Police. Goliath Tabuni moved to Gome District and presumed retired. Lanny Jaya faction under Purom Wenda became less active after Police operation in Balingga District and its headquarters in Kali Mau. Some members of this group left and "return" to Indonesia.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Central Papua</span> Province in Indonesia

Central Papua, officially the Central Papua Province is an Indonesian province located in the central region of Western New Guinea. It was formally established on 11 November 2022 from the former eight western regencies of the province of Papua. It covers an area of 61,072.92 km2 and had an officially estimated population of 1,430,951 in mid 2022. From 7 January to 12 January 2023, the separatist West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) periodically attacked Oksibil, the seat of Bintang Mountains Regency, Highland Papua. According to the Regional Police of Papua, the Bintang Mountains is one of 7 regencies that are vulnerable to separatist attacks.
