The Old Buncombe Road, also known, wholly or in part, as the Catawba Trail, the Drovers' Road, the Old Charleston Road, the Saluda Gap Road, the Saluda Mountain Road, the Old Warm Springs Road, and the Buncombe Turnpike, was a 19th-century wagon road in North America connecting the Carolinas to Kentucky and Tennessee, which had access by river to the markets of the lower Mississippi River valley. It was used by both migrants and as a trade route for driving stock animals to market. [1]

History

The road was part of an Indigenous trade route called the Catawba Trail. According to the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology, "The Catawba Trail (No. 33) ran southeast from the trail junction at Cumberland Gap, passed Tazewell, Tate Springs, Morristown, and Witts, near which it crossed the Great Indian Warpath, then went on near Rankin, and Newport, east from a point south of Newport to Paint Rock, and up the French Broad in North Carolina, diverging east to Stocksville, passing near Asheville, and then southeast through Hendersonville, N. C., into South Carolina, where it became what was later known as the Old South Carolina State Road to the north (No. 78). This preserved the same general direction to the Congarees (Columbia) and Charleston." [2] This trail was the most direct route through the Appalachian Mountains (and points beyond) from the Carolinas, such that "great six-horse wagons dragged themselves through this mountain highway, sliding down through Saluda Gap into Greenville District, South Carolina. The first easy way to market was down the Holston and into the Tennessee River to Chattanooga, but soon the Tennessee unobligingly broke navigation at the Muscle Shoals..." [3]

The route began in Charleston, South Carolina, on the Atlantic coast, wended northwest via North Carolina (following the French Broad River past Asheville), concluding at KnoxvilleGreenevilleJonesborough in East Tennessee. [4] The South Carolina sections included the Greenville Road in the Greenville District and the State Road through the Spartanburg District. [5] The section from Charleston to Columbia, South Carolina was known as the State Road. [6] A history of Spartanburg County states, "The Buncombe Road probably originated as a path from the Congarees trading post near Columbia, and led into the Cherokee country of upper Greenville County and beyond. Entering Spartanburg County near the present town of Enoree, this road ran along the ridge separating the Enoree and Tyger watersheds and passed into Greenville County near Greer." [7] The first wagon came through the Saluda gap in 1793. [8] In 1803 Phillip Hoodenpile oversaw the construction of a "fairly good road" between the Hot Springs and Newport, Tennessee. [9]

The Buncombe Turnpike passed through the Saluda Gap in the Appalachian mountain range. [10] Around 1820, Joel Poinsett laid out the connection from Columbia "by Newberry and Greenville, on up thru the Saluda mountains, winding up and down Chestnut, Callahan, Old Indian and the other rough peaks, to enter into North Carolina at Saluda Gap, not far from where the present highway crosses the state line." [8] He oversaw the construction of the Poinsett Bridge along the route. [8] Approximately 500 men worked on building the road. [11] As of 1825, the road needed repairs along a five-mile section between Asheville and the South Carolina state line. [12] A toll gate was opened on the turnpike in 1827. [13] The 1827 duel that killed Robert Brank Vance (at which Davy Crockett was present), took place at the state line on the Buncombe Road. [14] In Greenville, South Carolina there was a connecting road to Augusta, Georgia. [5] The full Buncombe Turnpike opened in 1828 with toll gates every 10 miles and stands (or rest stops) developed a flourishing trade. [9] The road was traveled by traders escorting "droves of horses, mules and hogs...Every five or six miles along the Buncombe road, and also below Greenville, were taverns or houses of entertainment." [15] In 1828, during the lead up to the presidential election with its debates over tariffs and internal improvements, South Carolina planter and former Congressman David R. Williams wrote, "It has been satisfactorily ascertained that there are brought into this State over the Saluda mountain road alone, from the West, US$1,500,000(equivalent to $41,618,182 in 2023) worth of live stock annually." [16]

British tourist J. S. Buckingham rode in one of the stage coaches that regularly traveled between Charleston and Asheville and recorded, "While on the left we could almost drop a stone into the water from the carriage window on that side, we could put out our hands and touch the rock of the perpendicular cliff on the other." [9]

The construction of the Asheville and Greenville Plank Road during the plank road craze of the 1850s resulted in decreased maintenance of the Buncombe Turnpike and a decline in use. [17] The Turnpike and the Plank Road were the first two "chartered roads" in Western North Carolina, which established tolls and did not use community volunteers or tax money for maintenance. [18] The construction of the Western North Carolina Railway dried up what remained of the traffic for freight and cargo, and the commercial traffic on the road ended in the 1880s. [9]

Saluda is a city in Polk and Henderson counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. Saluda is famous for sitting at the top of the Norfolk Southern Railway's Saluda Grade, which was the steepest main line standard-gauge railway line in the United States until Norfolk Southern ceased operations on the line in 2001. Saluda is close to the South Carolina state line, between Asheville, North Carolina, and Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The French Broad River is a river in the U.S. states of North Carolina and Tennessee. It flows 218 miles (351 km) from near the town of Rosman in Transylvania County, North Carolina, into Tennessee, where its confluence with the Holston River at Knoxville forms the beginning of the Tennessee River. The river flows through the counties of Transylvania, Buncombe, Henderson, and Madison in North Carolina, and Cocke, Jefferson, Sevier, and Knox in Tennessee. It drains large portions of the Pisgah National Forest and the Cherokee National Forest.

U.S. Route 25 or U.S. Highway 25 (US 25) is a north–south United States Numbered Highway that runs for 750 miles (1,210 km) in the Southern and Midwestern U.S. Its southern terminus is in Brunswick, Georgia, from where it proceeds mostly due north, passing through the cities of Augusta, Georgia; Greenville, South Carolina; and Asheville, North Carolina, before dividing into two branches, known as US 25W and US 25E between Newport, Tennessee, and North Corbin, Kentucky. After passing through Richmond and Lexington, Kentucky, it reaches its northern terminus at Ohio state line in Covington, Kentucky. The route is an important crossing of the Appalachian Mountains, and it is covered by three of the corridors of the Appalachian Development Highway System (ADHS). When the highway was originally established in 1926, the route extended from North Augusta, South Carolina, to Port Huron, Michigan. The southern end was extended to its current terminus in 1936, while the northern end was truncated in 1974.

The Cherokee Path was the primary route of English and Scots traders from Charleston to Columbia, South Carolina in Colonial America. It was the way they reached Cherokee towns and territories along the upper Keowee River and its tributaries. In its lower section it was known as the Savannah River. They referred to these towns along the Keowee and Tugaloo rivers as the Lower Towns, in contrast to the Middle Towns in Western North Carolina and the Overhill Towns in present-day southeastern Tennessee west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Mount Pisgah is a mountain in the Appalachian mountain range and part of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, United States. The mountain's height is 5,721 feet above sea level, and it sits approximately 15 miles southwest of Asheville, near the crossing of the boundaries of Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson and Transylvania counties. It is located on the border of Buncombe and Haywood counties, close to the point where Henderson and Transylvania meet them, but not actually within the latter two counties. The mountain is easily accessible via a hiking trail from the Blue Ridge Parkway, near the Pisgah Inn.

Pisgah National Forest is a National Forest in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. It is administered by the United States Forest Service, part of the United States Department of Agriculture. The Pisgah National Forest is completely contained within the state of North Carolina. The forest is managed together with the other three North Carolina National Forests from common headquarters in Asheville, North Carolina. There are local ranger district offices located in Pisgah Forest, Mars Hill, and Nebo.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Great Indian Warpath</span> Trails in eastern North America used by Native Americans

The Great Indian Warpath (GIW)—also known as the Great Indian War and Trading Path, or the Seneca Trail—was that part of the network of trails in eastern North America developed and used by Native Americans which ran through the Great Appalachian Valley. The system of footpaths extended from what is now upper New York to deep within Alabama. Various Native peoples traded and made war along the trails, including the Catawba, numerous Algonquian tribes, the Cherokee, and the Iroquois Confederacy. The British traders' name for the route was derived from combining its name among the northeastern Algonquian tribes, Mishimayagat or "Great Trail", with that of the Shawnee and Delaware, Athawominee or "Path where they go armed".

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Poinsett Bridge</span> Bridge in Greenville County, South Carolina

Poinsett Bridge is the oldest bridge in South Carolina and perhaps in the entire southeastern United States. Named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, it was built in 1820 as part of the Old Buncombe Road from Columbia, South Carolina, to Saluda Mountain. The stone bridge, which includes a 14-foot (4.3 m) Gothic arch and stretches 130 feet (40 m) over Little Gap Creek, may have been designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument. Though no longer in use, the bridge remains largely intact and is part of the 400-acre (161.9 ha) Poinsett Bridge Heritage Preserve. There is a nature trail a few hundred yards from the bridge. The bridge, about which ghost stories have been told for decades, is located off U.S. Highway 25 north of Greenville, South Carolina. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

The Catawba Trail is a trail developed and used by Native Americans that leads from the Carolinas northerly into Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Its several branches led from western Virginia, through West Virginia, Kentucky, and eastern Tennessee. It is a part of the Great Indian Warpath. Its South Carolina and North Carolina origination, sometimes called the Old Buncombe Road, passes through the Unaka Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains.

Jones Gap State Park is a South Carolina state park in northern Greenville County, near Marietta. The 3,964-acre (1,604 ha) park, which includes the headwaters of the Middle Saluda River, is, with Caesars Head State Park, administered by the state Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism as part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness.

Interstate 26 (I-26) in North Carolina runs through the western part of the state from the Tennessee border to the South Carolina border, following the Appalachian Mountains. It is part of the larger I-26, a regional Interstate that runs from Kingsport, Tennessee, to Charleston, South Carolina. I-26 is mostly four lanes through North Carolina with few exceptions. Though signed with east–west cardinal directions, in North Carolina and Tennessee, the route goes nearly north–south, with the northern direction labeled "West" and vice versa.

The Piedmont Atlantic megaregion is a neologism created by the Regional Plan Association for an area of the Southeastern United States that contains parts of the states of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Transportation in Appalachia</span> Transportation infrastructure in the Appalachia region

The Appalachian region has always had to allocate much resources and time into transportation due to the region's notable and unique geography. Mountainous terrain and commonly occurring adverse weather effects such as heavy fog and snowfall made roads hazardous and taxing on the traveling vehicles. Initially, European settlers found gaps in the mountains, among them the Cumberland Gap and the Wilderness Road. Another notable challenge of Appalachian travel is the political elements of constructing transportation routes. Most travel systems are funded by municipalities, but since The Appalachian area has several different states it can be difficult for the various governments to agree on how to work on transportation. The most influential forms of travel in the Appalachian region are based on water trading routes, roads and railroads.

The South Atlantic League, nicknamed the SALLY League, was a Minor League Baseball league that operated in the Southern United States intermittently from 1904 to 1963. Initially Class C league, it was elevated to Class B in 1921, Class A in 1946, and Double-A in 1963. The circuit dissolved after the 1963 season and was refounded as the Southern League.

The Swannanoa Gap is a pass in the eastern United States through the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Asheville plateau. The pass sits on the Buncombe-McDowell County line in North Carolina near the head of the Catawba River. Long traversed by Native Americans, its trail was the first road into Buncombe County from the east.
