Classical music broad tradition of Western art music

Classical music is art music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western culture, including both liturgical (religious) and secular music. While a more precise term is also used to refer to the period from 1750 to 1820, this article is about the broad span of time from before the 6th century AD to the present day, which includes the Classical period and various other periods. The central norms of this tradition became codified between 1550 and 1900, which is known as the common-practice period.

Rhydian Roberts British singer and actor

Rhydian James Roberts, known mononymously as Rhydian, is a Welsh baritone singer, television presenter and musical theatre actor. He made his name by finishing second in series 4 of The X Factor, and has since become more widely known.

The UK Classical Charts are three record charts based on classical music in the United Kingdom: the Classical Artist Albums Chart, the Classical Compilation Albums Chart and the Specialist Classical Albums Chart. The charts are commercial monitoring and marketing devices used by the UK music industry to measure its effectiveness in promoting and selling albums, nominally in the field of classical music. All three charts are compiled by the Official Charts Company (OCC). The measurements are made by collating the returns of sales from a number of well-known music stores on a regular basis, and this enables a ranking to be established. Most classical artist album sales in the UK are from crossover artists. For an album to be classified as classical in the charts, it has to have 60% of the playing time dedicated to "classical or traditional music". Only albums that entirely classical or traditional music qualify for inclusion in the Specialist Classical Albums Chart.

Background and recording

On 29 August 2013, it was revealed that Rhydian had decided to fund his fifth studio album through PledgeMusic. Explaining his decision, he said: "The music I make is about passion, and your passion for my music has allowed me to reach out further than I ever thought possible – so now I'd like you to be involved in a much more exciting way of making that music. A way that keeps all of the ideas, the passion, emotion and energy intact. So with a team we have put together and the help of revolutionary Pledge, we are creating a small but perfectly formed record label to make my next album. The album's artwork was revealed on 4 February 2014." [1]

PledgeMusic is an online direct-to-fan music platform, launched in August 2009, that was started to facilitate musicians reaching out to their fanbase to pre-sell, market, and distribute music projects including recordings, music videos, and concerts. Broadly speaking it bears some similarities to such platforms as ArtistShare, Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Patreon, RocketHub and Sellaband.

Rhydian worked with the Orchestra of St. John and producer Ben Robbins on the album. [2] He also recorded duets with Bonnie Tyler, Kerry Ellis and The Edmondson Sisters. [2] "This album has an epic feel," Rhydian said. "I wanted it to have that wide screen quality you get with the best movie soundtracks. I want it to be mesmerising and inspiring, full of passion and exciting all your emotions. Love, romance, hope, despair, faith, and the joy of being alive are all in there." He added, "There are some deeply personal choices like the Pearl Fishers duet by Bizet. I'm duetting with myself as a baritone and tenor, which sounds unusual, but I think really works well. The aria is close to my heart as it inspired me at the age of 14 to become a singer." [2] On 3 March 2014, it was revealed that the album would be released on 14 April 2014. [2] This makes Rhydian only the second X Factor contestant, after JLS, to release five albums.
