History

The parish was established by the Augustinians on 30 May 1899 with the Rev. Nicholas J. Murphy, O.S.A. being the first pastor. [2]

Augustinians general term for various religious orders

The term Augustinians, named after Augustine of Hippo (354–430), applies to two distinct types of Catholic religious orders, dating back to the first millennium but formally created in the 13th century, and some Anglican religious orders, created in the 19th century, though technically there is no "Order of St. Augustine" in Anglicanism. Within Anglicanism the Rule of St. Augustine is followed only by women, who form several different communities of Augustinian nuns in the Anglican Communion.

The first mass in Tompkinsville occurred 12 November 1899 in McRobert's Hall on Arietta Street. [2] A large chapel in the building of the Augustinian Academy (Tompkinsville, Staten Island) "was used for parochial purposes with the chapel of Our Lady of Consolation in Tompkinsville. [2] The chapel, which is situated on St. Paul's Avenue, was erected on 2 February 1902." [2] It was enlarged and renovated in the summer of 1908 and the parish numbered around 400 in 1914. [2] The second pastor, the Irish-born Rev. B.E. Daly, O.S.A., was a missionary before being appointed to the Tompkinsville parish on 22 December 1910. [2]

The modern church building was designed by the architectural firm of Genovese & Maddalene of 175 Rock Road, Glen Rock, New Jersey. [1] The firm also designed Manhattan's Church of the Nativity in 1968. [1] It was dedicated by Terrence Cardinal Cooke on April 26, 1968.

Augustinian Academy (Staten Island)

The Augustinian Academy on Staten Island, New York, was founded on May 30, 1899, in conjunction with the new Roman Catholic parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel, both by the Augustinian Friars. The buildings were originally erected for the Visitation Sisters, and were purchased and modified by the Augustinians for educational purposes. The academy buildings were dedicated by Bishop Sebastiano Martinelli on September 10, 1899, and officially opened on September 13, 1899, as "The Catholic High School of Richmond Borough". This was the first Catholic settlement in Tompkinsville, and the first Mass was said in the neighborhood on November 12, 1899, in McRobert's Hall on Arietta Street. Our Lady of Good Counsel occupied the large chapel in the academy building, along with the small chapel of Our Lady of Consolation, erected in 1902 on St. Paul's Avenue.
