Parasqualidus is a genus of cyprinid fish endemic to Vietnam. It is monotypic, being represented by the single species Parasqualidus maii.
The fish was discovered in 1997 and named in honor of Mai Dinh Yen (b. 1933), [2] Professor of Hanoi Science University and freshwater fish taxonomist. [3] [4]
The genus Parasqualidus is similar to the genus Squalidus, but differentiated from other genera of Gobioninae by its cephalic lateral line system, namely the absence of supratemporal and preoperculomandibular canals. [5]
There were 4 specimens collected in 1997 measuring 33-37mm. [6]
The original fish were found in a small river stream, about 25m wide and 50-100cm deep. The stream had a soft mud bottom.
