Paul Francis O'Kane (born 21 March 1988) is a Scottish Labour and Co-operative politician who has served as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the West Scotland region since 2021. [1]
Born in Paisley Raised in Neilston,Paul O'Kane attended St Luke's High School in Barrhead,where he was Head Boy. From there he went onto study at the University of Glasgow for an MA (Hons) in English Literature and Politics. Whilst attending the University of Glasgow,he was chair of the University Labour Club.
After graduating from university in 2010,O'Kane worked as a Development Officer with Volunteer Centre East Dunbartonshire. [1] He then worked for the Beardmore Trust in Clydebank. Prior to his election to the Scottish Parliament,he worked for seven years with ENABLE Scotland,a major learning disability charity and social care provider,leaving the role of Policy and Participation Manager upon his election to Parliament.
O'Kane worked as a parliamentary researcher to two Scottish Labour MPs,Jim Murphy (2007–10) and Gemma Doyle (2012–13). [1] He served as a member of East Renfrewshire Council from 2012,representing the people of Neilston,Uplawmoor and Newton Mearns North [2] and served as Deputy Education convenor. He was re-elected in 2017 to represent the new council ward Newton Mearns North and Neilston [3] following boundary changes and became Deputy Leader of East Renfrewshire Council as well as Convenor for Education and Equalities. He was the Scottish Labour group leader on the council from 2017 to 2021. [4] He stood down as a councillor at the 2022 council elections. [1]
On 6 April 2015,he was chased down a street in Barrhead by a man with a chainsaw while campaigning for Jim Murphy in the 2015 general election. [5]
O'Kane has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament for West Scotland since the 2021 Scottish Parliament Election. [6] He served as Deputy Convenor of the Health,Social Care and Sport Committee from 2021 [7] until 2023 and Scottish Labour Shadow Minister for Public Health,Social Care and Drugs Policy. In April 2023,he was promoted to the position of Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice and Social and Equalities replacing Pam Duncan Glancy who moved to the Education and Skills Portfolio. [8]
O'Kane backed the UK Government’s decision to introduce means-testing for the Winter Fuel Payment,voting in the Scottish Parliament against calls to reverse the decision. [9]
O'Kane is the first openly gay man elected to the Scottish Parliament for Scottish Labour. [10] O'Kane married his husband in August 2021. [11] [1] According to Who's Who,O'Kane's recreations are "travelling,reading,going to the theatre,spending time with family and friends". [1] O'Kane has UK and Irish citizenship. [12]

The 2015 Scottish Labour Party leadership election was formally triggered on 16 May 2015 by the resignation of Jim Murphy as Leader of the Scottish Labour Party,which took effect on 13 June 2015,following the party's defeat at the 2015 general election. A new leader and deputy leader would be chosen following the resignations of Jim Murphy and Kezia Dugdale. In the meantime,former Scottish Labour leader Iain Gray took over as acting leader. On 15 August,Dugdale was elected to lead the party,while Alex Rowley was chosen to become her deputy.

The 2022 East Renfrewshire Council election took place on 5 May 2022 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. The election used the 5 wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004,with 18 councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members,using the STV electoral system.
