The mountain was named by R. H. Sargent, topographer for the US Geological Survey in the early mapping of Glacier Park, to honor the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, (1807–1882).

McPartland Mountain is located in the Livingston Range, Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. McPartland Mountain is a little more than a mile south of Heavens Peak. The mountain's name is believed to refer to Frank McPartland, of eastern Montana, who worked around nearby Lake McDonald for two seasons, and drowned in a boating accident on the lake in the 1890s.

Vaught, a lawyer from Jacksonville, Illinois, who spent many of his summers in Glacier Park and corresponded with George Bird Grinnell, who named many of the features in the park.

Rainbow Peak is the ninth-tallest mountain in Glacier National Park and rises over 1 mile (1.6 km) above Bowman Lake. From the parking lot at the Bowman Lake Campground, the elevation gain is 5,865 ft (1,788 m).

Located in the Two Medicine region in the southeastern section of Glacier National Park, the peak is likely named after Raphael Pumpelly, who lead the Northern Transcontinental Railway Survey party that crossed Pitamakan Pass in 1883.
