Peter R. Buseck (born September 30, 1935) is a Regents Professor in the School of Molecular Sciences (SMS) at Arizona State University (ASU). He is a pioneering researcher in the application of transmission electron microscopy to mineralogy, meteoritics, fullerenes and atmospheric chemistry. [1] In 2019 Buseck was awarded the Roebling Medal, the highest award of the Mineralogical Society of America. [2] The scientific journal Nature recognized Buseck's 1978 paper [3] as a milestone in crystallography. [4] [5]
Buseck is the only child of Paul and Edith Buseck. He was born on September 30, 1935, in Frankfurt, Germany. His family emigrated to the United States in February 1937. His education was in the public schools of New York City, graduating in 1952 from the Bronx High School of Science. Buseck attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he majored in and received an A.B. in geology in 1957. While at Antioch, Buseck had cooperative education jobs at Harvard University, the United States Geological Survey in Denver, Colorado, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the United States Forest Service at Mount Baker, Washington (state), and mining companies in Peru and Chile.
Buseck's graduate studies (Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy) were at Columbia University, under the direction of thesis advisor Prof. Chas. H. Behre Jr., studying mineral deposits in the United States and Mexico. Buseck completed work for his Ph.D. in 1961 and received his Ph.D. in 1962. He did post-doctoral research at the Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington from 1961 to 1963, where he learned experimental techniques in mineralogy.
In 1963 Buseck was hired by Arizona State University with joint appointments to the Department of Geology (now the School of Earth and Space Exploration) and the Department of Chemistry (now the School of Molecular Sciences), where he continues his professional career. Buseck studied phenomena from geological, chemical, and physical perspectives, which gave his research an interdisciplinary character when such collaborations were rare.
Buseck's research primarily involved the application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in four major areas: mineralogy, meteoritics, fullerenes and related carbon phases, and atmospheric chemistry. Buseck, along with John Armstrong, obtained the first quantitative chemical analyses of airborne particles. Buseck was also a pioneer in high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) mineralogy, which allowed crystal structures to be imaged directly. Buseck also performed some of the earliest mineralogical research on carbonaceous chondrite meteorites.
Sabbatical-year appointments were at the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory (ICL) and Department of Geology at Oxford University (1970–71), Stanford University Department of Geology (1976-1977); Laboratory Mineralogie & Cristallographie, University of Paris VII (1985–86); Special Assistant, Office of the Director of the National Science Foundation (1994–95), and Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Harvard University (2001-2002).
In 2021, the Center for Meteorite Studies at ASU was named in honor of Buseck. [6]
Electron crystallography is a subset of methods in electron diffraction focusing upon detailed determination of the positions of atoms in solids using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). It can involve the use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, electron diffraction patterns including convergent-beam electron diffraction or combinations of these. It has been successful in determining some bulk structures, and also surface structures. Two related methods are low-energy electron diffraction which has solved the structure of many surfaces, and reflection high-energy electron diffraction which is used to monitor surfaces often during growth.

The Mineralogical Society of America (MSA) is a scientific membership organization. MSA was founded in 1919 for the advancement of mineralogy, crystallography, geochemistry, and petrology, and promotion of their uses in other sciences, industry, and the arts. It encourages fundamental research about natural materials; supports the teaching of mineralogical concepts and procedures to students of mineralogy and related arts and sciences; and attempts to raise the scientific literacy of society with respect to issues involving mineralogy. The Society encourages the general preservation of mineral collections, displays, mineral localities, type minerals and scientific data. MSA represents the United States with regard to the science of mineralogy in any international context. The Society was incorporated in 1937 and approved as a nonprofit organization in 1959.
Frank Christopher Hawthorne is an English-born Canadian mineralogist, crystallographer and spectroscopist. He works at the University of Manitoba and is currently distinguished professor emeritus. By combining graph theory, bond-valence theory and the moments approach to the electronic energy density of solids he has developed bond topology as a rigorous approach to understanding the atomic arrangements, chemical compositions and paragenesis of complex oxide and oxysalt minerals.
Richard Henderson is a British molecular biologist and biophysicist and pioneer in the field of electron microscopy of biological molecules. Henderson shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2017 with Jacques Dubochet and Joachim Frank. "Thanks to his work, we can look at individual atoms of living nature, thanks to cryo-electron microscopes we can see details without destroying samples, and for this he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry."
The Buseck Center for Meteorite Studies was founded in 1960, on the Tempe Campus of Arizona State University, and houses the world's largest university-based meteorite collection. The collection contains specimens from over 1,600 separate meteorite falls and finds, and is actively used internationally for planetary, geological and space science research. The Center also operates a meteorite museum which is open to the public.
Brian Harold Mason was a New Zealand geochemist and mineralogist who was one of the pioneers in the study of meteorites. He played a leading part in understanding the nature of the Solar System through his studies of meteorites and lunar rocks. He also examined and classified thousands of meteorites collected from Antarctica.
Paul A. Ramdohr, was a German mineralogist, ore deposit-researcher and a pioneer of ore microscopy.
Rafal Edward Dunin-Borkowski HonFRMS is a British experimental physicist. He is currently Director of the Institute for Microstructure Research (PGI-5) and the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C) in Forschungszentrum Jülich and Professor of Experimental Physics in RWTH Aachen University.
Prof Gustavus ("Gustav") Rose FRSFor HFRSE was a German mineralogist who was a native of Berlin. He was President of the German Geological Society from 1863 to 1873.
Fritz Henning Emil Paul Berndt Laves was a German crystallographer who served as the president of the German Mineralogical Society from 1956 to 1958. He is the namesake of Laves phases and the Laves tilings; the Laves graph, a highly-symmetrical three-dimensional crystal structure that he studied, was named after him by H. S. M. Coxeter.
Alexandra Navrotsky is a physical chemist in the field of nanogeoscience. She is an elected member of the United States National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the American Philosophical Society (APS). She was a board member of the Earth Sciences and Resources division of the NAS from 1995 until 2000. In 2005, she was awarded the Urey Medal, by the European Association of Geochemistry. In 2006, she was awarded the Harry H. Hess Medal, by the American Geophysical Union. She is currently the director of NEAT ORU, a primary program in nanogeoscience. She is distinguished professor at University of California, Davis.
Maricite or marićite is a sodium iron phosphate mineral (NaFe2+PO4), that has two metal cations connected to a phosphate tetrahedron. It is structurally similar to the much more common mineral olivine. Maricite is brittle, usually colorless to gray, and has been found in nodules within shale beds often containing other minerals.

Carleton B. Moore was an Emeritus Regents Professor in the School of Molecular Sciences (SMS) and the School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University (ASU). He was a pioneering researcher in the field of meteorite studies, and the founding Director of the ASU Center for Meteorite Studies, which houses the world’s largest university-based meteorite collection. Moore is credited with being the first scientist to detect carbon in lunar samples returned by the Apollo astronauts and he was also one of the researchers credited with identifying the first extra-terrestrial amino acids in a meteorite. Both an asteroid, 5046 Carletonmoore in 1981, and a mineral, carletonmooreite in 2021, were named in honor of his contributions to meteorite research.

Her research considers the development of electron diffraction for the three dimensional characterisation of materials. She is a member of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry. She was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.
