A post office was established at Pigeon in 1883, and remained in operation until 1920. [3] The community took its name from the nearby Little Pigeon Creek. [4]

It was the site of the Little Pigeon Creek Community, Abraham Lincoln's Indiana boyhood home, now the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial.
