The Portfolio Committee on Health is a National Assembly of South Africa committee established to oversee the work of the Department of Health (DOH) as well as the following related entities: the Allied Health Professions Council, the Compensation Commissioner for Occupational Diseases, the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS), the South Africa Dental Technicians Council, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the Interim Traditional Health Practitioners Council, the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), the Office of Health Standards Compliance, the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority, the South African Nursing Council, and the South African Pharmacy Council. As of 2021, Kenneth Jacobs of the African National Congress serves as chairperson of the committee. Notable former chairpersons include Sibongiseni Dhlomo (2019–2021) Mary-Ann Dunjwa (2014–2019) and Bevan Goqwana (2009–2014).

Membership

Following the 2019 South African general election held on 8 May, the Rules Committee met on 5 June and resolved that portfolio committees will consist of 11 members for the sixth parliament (2019–2024): 6 from the African National Congress, 2 from the Democratic Alliance, 1 from the Economic Freedom Fighters and two from other parties. [2] Members of the National Assembly were formally appointed to serve on the respective portfolio committees on 27 June 2019. [3] The Portfolio Committee on Health met on 2 July to elect a new chairperson and Sibongiseni Dhlomo of the African National Congress was elected. [4]

Sibongiseni Ngcobo is a South African politician who has been a Member of Parliament (MP) in the National Assembly since May 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he is currently the youngest Member of the National Assembly. Ngcobo served as a DA councillor in the Richmond Local Municipality from 2016 to 2019.

Benedicta Maria van Minnen is a South African politician and a member of the Democratic Alliance. She has been a Member of the National Assembly since 22 May 2019. Previously, she served as a councillor in the City of Cape Town.

Mary-Ann Lindelwa Dunjwa is a South African politician from the Eastern Cape. A member of the African National Congress, she was elected to the National Assembly in 2009. After her re-election in 2014, she became the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health, a position she held until 2019, when she was elected Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour.

Kenneth Leonard Jacobs is a South African politician and doctor currently serving as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health in the National Assembly of South Africa since 2021. He has been a Member of Parliament since 2019. Jacobs is a member of the African National Congress.

Claudia Nonhlanhla Ndaba is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress, she has served as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and People with Disabilities since 2019 and has been a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2014. She served as Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Filling of Vacancies in the Commission for Gender Equality twice during her first term in parliament. Prior to her election to parliament, Ndaba served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014.

The Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development is a portfolio committee of the South African National Assembly in the Parliament of South Africa. The committee is responsible for oversight of the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) and associated entities, including the Agricultural Research Council, the National Agricultural Marketing Council, the Perishable Products Export Control Board, the Onderstepoort Biological Products Limited, the Ingonyama Trust Board, the Registration of deeds trading account, the Agricultural landholdings account and the Office of the valuer-general.

The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education is a portfolio committee of the National Assembly in the Parliament of South Africa. The remit of this committee is to oversee the work of the Department of Basic Education, Umalusi and the South African Council of Educators.

The Portfolio Committee on Communications is a portfolio committee of the National Assembly in the Parliament of South Africa. The role of the committee is to oversee the work of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies and other related public bodies.

Mohlopi Philemon Mapulane is a South African politician who is the current Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies and a member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the African National Congress. He previously served as Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Joint Committee on Appointment of Board Members to the National Youth Development Agency from 2016 to 2019, as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs from 2016 to 2019, as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Science and Technology from 2019 to 2021, and as Chairperson of the Powers and Privileges of Parliament Committee from 2020 to 2021.

Tshilidzi Bethuel Munyai is a South African politician who was elected as an African National Congress Member of the National Assembly of South Africa in 2019. In August 2021, Munyai served as the acting chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health.
