Power 98 is an English radio station of So Drama! Entertainment in Singapore. [2] It is a 24-hour English entertainment station which features contemporary pop music and the latest entertainment news and sports updates.

History

Plans for the new radio station were announced in January 1994 at the opening of Safra Resort and Country Club. [3] The station received a start-up cost of $3.3 million from the Ministry of Defence. [3]

Power 98 targeted male listeners between 18 and 35, which the management considers to be an "under-served market which is thriving", compared to other radio stations. [3] The station had recruited seven deejays, [1] all around their twenties and have experience in hosting programmes, at private functions and pubs and discos. [3] Initially broadcasting from 6 am to 12 am, [1] four-fifths of its programming will be music including the hits from 1980s and 1990s, with the rest include news programmes five times a day, [1] defence-related information, movie previews and reviews, and games. [3] Power 98 will also air a weekly two-hour programme hosted by two servicemen where they will share their experiences and secrets of their success. [3] All programmes are in English, except for the bilingual lunch-time segment Power Lunch [1] where listeners could request songs in Mandarin. [3]

The launch of Power 98 was officiated by Lee Boon Yang, then-Minister for Welfare and Defence, at the Studebaker's discotheque on 31 October 1994 as the thirteenth radio station in Singapore. [1] The station launched at 7 am. [1]

The station underwent its first major revamp in 18 years on 19 March 2012, which includes changing its slogan from Hit Music and More to Hear The Difference, an overhaul of the station's website and a new line-up of DJs and programmes.

In 2019, the station rebranded as Power 98 Love Songs, as part of a move to divide its output into three genre-oriented services, accompanied by internet radio stations Power 98 Raw (contemporary hit radio), and Power 98 Retro (adult hits).
