Priochirus unicolor is a species of beetles belonging to the family Staphylinidae. This species can be found in Indonesia. [1]
Francis de Laporte de Castelnau described this species in 1835, placing it in the genus Leptochirus . [3] It continued to be classified in this genus by Wilhelm Ferdinand Erichson (1840) [6] and Albert Fauvel (1905). [7] Those who placed it in the genus Priochirus included Karl Borromaeus Maria Josef Heller (1898). [4]
Malcolm Cameron classified it in the Triacanthochirus subgenus of Priochirus. [8]
As per a 1920 designation by Robert Lucas, it is the type species of the subgenus EutriacanthusJakobson, 1908. [9]
In 2007, Jie Wu and Hong-Zhang Zhou transferred this species to the genus Plastus ; [10] this has been accepted by the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera. [11]
Its type locality is Java. [3] Fauvel wrote that its range included Sumatra, the Banggai Islands, Mentawai Islands, Bodjo, Borneo, Malacca, Cambodje. [7]
In 1898, Heller listed its distribution as Java and the Mentawai Islands. [4]
P. J. M. Greenslade described its range as comprising Indochina, Sumatra, and Java. [9]
Wu and Zhao reported observing it in Yunnan Province, China; [2] they also listed Vietnam as part of its range. [10]
Laport recorded its dimensions as 5½ lignes (≈12.4 mm, 0.49 in) long and 1¼ lignes (≈2.82 mm, 0.111 in) wide. [3] Erichson recorded its length as 6 lignes (≈13.55 mm, 0.533 in). [6] Max Bernhauer recorded its length as 13–16 mm (0.51–0.63 in) [12]
Staphylinoidea is a superfamily of beetles. It is a very large and diverse group with worldwide distribution.
Stenus is a genus of semiaquatic rove beetles in the subfamily Steninae, and one of the largest genera in the kingdom Animalia, with some 2700 known species worldwide. They are predators of Collembola and other small arthropods. Adults have a protrusible labium with a sticky tip used in prey capture. To overcome the rapid escape of Collembola, the labium is protruded at high speed by hemolymph pressure, and immediately withdrawn, pulling the prey within the range of the mandibles. However, the labium tip does not easily stick to prey covered in scales or setae or that have a large body size. Stenus comma is more likely to catch such prey by lunging forward and grabbing them directly with its mandibles rather than using its labium. Stenus species are also known for "skimming" on the water surface using their pygidial gland secretions that act as a surfactant and rapidly propel the beetle fast forward, a phenomenon known as the Marangoni effect. Stenus comma has been seen to achieve a velocity of 0.75 m/s, and to cover a distance of up to 15 m if the secretion is continuous.
