Purves, Texas

Purves is an unincorporated community in Erath County, Texas, United States. Purves is located in the southwestern part of the county, along Fm-219 South, seven miles south of the City of Dublin.

The community was named for two local men named Purves, who started the Post Office and a church in the community around the 1890s. Circa 1900, the population had peaked at 117 residents. In 1907, the Purves Post Office was closed after only around 10 years of service. By the late 1940s, the population had dropped to approximately 95. At that time Purves was home to a school, two churches, and two businesses. In the 1980s, the community had a population of around 50, a figure that remained steady throughout the 1990s and the 2000s. The First Baptist Church of Purves continues to serve the community as of 2024.[ citation needed ]

Education

The first school at Purves was named Field's School after G.C. & Elizabeth Field. Purves school came into being in 1899 when Field's school consolidated with Live Oak. Purves school consolidated with Dublin Public Schools in 1951. [1]

Alexander is an unincorporated community located in southern Erath County in Central Texas, United States. Alexander is located in the southern part of the county, along Texas State Highway 6 and Fm-914. The town was originally called: "Harper's Mill" when the Post Office was approved for operation around the 1870s. The name was changed in the 1880s, when the Texas Central line, part of the historic Katy Railroad, was built from east to west through the townsite on its way from the Waco area to Stamford, with a branch to Cross Plains from the line at De Leon. In 1907, the Stephenville North and South Texas Railway, part of the Cotton Belt Route, was constructed from north to south and intersected with the Katy's line in Alexander. This made the town an important community for business in the area. The Cotton Belt Route ran from Stephenville through to nearby Carlton. On October 17, 1934, the Cotton Belt Route was abandoned from Stephenville to Hamilton. The Katy Railroad remained through Alexander until its abandonment in the late 1960s. The Alexander post office closed in 1970 and the population remained at a steady 40 from the 1970s through 2000.

Edna Hill is an unincorporated community in Erath County, Texas, United States, located in the extreme southwestern corner of the county along Fm-1702, approximately nine miles south of the City of Dublin in Central Texas. The first settlers of the area arrived around the 1850s. In the early 1900s, a school was opened in the community and from 1935 to 1940 Edna Hill consisted of the school, numerous homes, and two churches. In the last half of the 1940s, the Edna Hill School District consolidated with Dublin Schools. In the 1960s, Edna Hill's population was around 32, a figure which it remained steady from the late 1970s through the 2000s.

Harbin is an unincorporated community located in Erath County in Central Texas, United States. Harbin is in the southwestern part of the county at the intersections of Fm-847 and the Fort Worth and Western Railroad, four miles east-northeast of the City of Dublin.

Speegleville is an unincorporated community located in McLennan County in Central Texas. Speegleville is a Suburb in the Waco Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is located along Texas State Highway 6 around 8 miles to the west of the City of Waco on the western edge of Lake Waco.

Clairette is an unincorporated community located in Erath County in Central Texas, United States. Clairette is situated in the southern part of the county along Texas State Highway 6 and the Bosque River, five miles northwest of Hico, and 16 miles to the east of Dublin. Clairette was founded during the 1880s when the Texas Central line, part of the historic Katy Railroad, was constructed through the townsite on its way from the Waco area to Stamford, with a branch to Cross Plains from the line at De Leon. The Katy abandoned the line through Clairette in the late 1960s. Clairette was named after a now defunct brand of soap that was popular at the time. At its peak, Clairette had a population of around 300 however, from the 1970s through the 2000s Clairette's population remained at a steady 60. Clairette declined due to the removal of the railroad but also the construction of nearby US Highway 281 and the improvement of Texas State Highway 6, which allowed for easier commuting to larger nearby areas.

Selden is an unincorporated community in south central Erath County, Texas, United States, along Fm-913 between U.S. Routes 67 and 281, approximately 9 miles (14 km) south-southeast of Stephenville. It was named after a man who owned a nearby ranch during the 1850s. Selden was granted a post office in the 1890s, and by 1900, the community had grown to near 100 residents. The post office disbanded in 1915 after significant population fluctuations. The population remained at around a steady 71 from 1980 through the 1990s. Through the 2000s, Selden maintained a Baptist church, a Methodist church, two cemeteries, a community center, and a Volunteer Fire Department. It continues to be a primarily farming, dairy and ranching community.
