Quiz on Korea is a South Korean television game show organized as part of an annual international public diplomacy program [1] by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and KBS television. The quiz tests participants general knowledge of Korea. Quiz on Korea aims to help spread Hallyu, the "Korean Wave". [2]

Overview

Preliminary domestic rounds are held within selected countries and national winners receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Korea to represent their country in the final round in Korea. The representatives are taken on a week-long guided tour around Korea. The final round is filmed at KBS studios in Seoul [3] and broadcast on KBS as a special program for the Chuseok holidays, which generally fall in September or early October. It is also aired by KBS World for some 200 million people in 88 countries around the world to watch. [4] Since its inception the grand prize for the overall winner has been a brand new Hyundai car. Three sudden-death multi-choice rounds are held, with the winner of each round progressing to a fourth and final round.

First Quiz on Korea

Twenty three countries were invited to participate to mark anniversaries of diplomatic relations. [9]

Second Quiz on Korea

Thirty countries participated. [24] The final of the second Quiz on Korea was held on August 31, [24] 2013, and was broadcast on KBS 1 on September 19 [24] during Chuseok.

Third Quiz on Korea

Twenty-one countries participated. [30] The final of the third Quiz on Korea was held on September 5, 2014, and was broadcast on KBS 1 on September 9 [30] during Chuseok.

<i>Chuseok</i> Korean holiday, the full moon of the 8th lunar calendar

Chuseok, also known as Hangawi, is a major mid-autumn harvest festival and a three-day holiday in South Korea celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar on the full moon. In North Korea, they only celebrate for the day of chuseok. Like many other harvest festivals around the world, it is held around the autumn equinox, i.e. at the very end of summer or in early autumn. It is the biggest traditional holiday in South Korea.

A working holiday visa is a residence permit allowing travellers to undertake employment in the country issuing the visa to supplement their travel funds. For many young people, holding a working holiday visa enables them to experience living in a foreign country without having to find work sponsorship in advance or going on an expensive university exchange programme.

Sugar was a South Korean girl group formed by Starworld in 2001. The group's final lineup was composed of Ahyoomee, Hye Seung and Lee Ha Rin.

Koreans in France numbered 29,367 individuals as of 2014, making them the 3rd-largest Korean diaspora community in Western Europe, according to South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Invincible Youth is a South Korean variety show which aired its first season on KBS2 from October 23, 2009 to December 24, 2010. Season 1 featured seven girls from K-pop idol groups wherein they experience how it is to live and survive in the Korean rural outdoors. It started its second season on November 12, 2011 featuring eight girls.
