Assam is a state in northeastern India, south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys. Assam covers an area of 78,438 km2 (30,285 sq mi). The state is bordered by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to the north; Nagaland and Manipur to the east; Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Bangladesh to the south; and West Bengal to the west via the Siliguri Corridor, a 22 kilometres (14 mi) wide strip of land that connects the state to the rest of India. North Lakhimpur College is an autonomous college, affiliated to Dibrugarh University in North Lakhimpur on the north bank of the Brahmaputra river in upper Assam. North Lakhimpur college is the first autonomous college in Assam. The college was established in 1952. In 2012, North Lakhimpur College was accredited with an "A" grade by the NAAC with a CGPA of 3.08. On 30 May 2013, North Lakhimpur College received a letter from the University Grants Commission granting it the status of an autonomous college. North Lakhimpur College is the first college from Assam to receive this status from the UGC.

Assam Combined Entrance Examination is a state-government controlled centralized entrance examination, conducted by the Assam Science and Technology University for admission into the 7 premier government engineering colleges in Assam. The test is taken after the 12th grade for admission to graduation courses. The exam can be taken by those who studied Pure Science stream in plus two level with the specific subjects tested in the examination, which are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics. Every year approximately 25,000 people take the examination, and it is increasing. Students of both Assam Higher Secondary Education Council and the Central Board of Secondary Education board take the test. Formerly the examination was conducted by Dibrugarh University and since 2018 it is conducted by Assam Science & Technology University.
