Ragsdale is located in eastern Knox County at 38°44′45″N87°19′30″W / 38.74583°N 87.32500°W . It is 13 miles (21 km) northeast of Vincennes, the county seat, and the same distance northwest of Washington.

The oldest county in Indiana, it was one of two original counties created in the Northwest Territory in 1790, alongside St. Clair County, Illinois. Knox County was gradually reduced in size as subsequent counties were established. It was established in its present configuration when Daviess County was partitioned off.
