Raichur Junction railway station, also known as Raichuru Junction railway station (station code:RC^[1]), is located in Raichur district in the Indian state of Karnataka and serves Raichur and the surrounding industrially efflorescent area. The station has three platforms.

History

Raichur was the meeting point of two great railway systems of yesteryears – the Great Indian Peninsula Railway and Madras Railway. While the former started construction from Mumbai, the latter from Chennai. The two systems met at Raichur in 1871.^[2]^[3]

The 58 km long Raichur–Gadwal railway track was opened in 2013. Gadwal is on the Dhone–Kacheguda line.^[4]

It is the fourth busiest railway station in Karnataka after Bangalore City Junction, Yesvantpur Junction and Hubbali Junction.

New line is constructing from Ginegera (Koppala district) to Mahaboob Nagar via Gangavathi, Sindhanoor, Manvi and Raichur. First phase Ginigera to Raichur estimated to complete in 2022. Completion of this line will make Raichur a large junction with access to Goa, coastal central and southern Karnataka. The distance between Hyderabad and Mangalore will reduce drastically.

Classification

Raichur is classified as an A–category station in the Guntakal railway division.^[5]

Electrification

Electrification work in the 641 km Pune–Wadi–Guntakal sector have been completed from Guntakal Junction to Kalaburgi Junction (GULBARGA) and other part of the project getting electrified.^[6]

It is the third largest junction by number of branch lines in the state of Tamil Nadu after Salem junction,Tiruchchirapalli Junction.

The Chennai Central – Bangalore City line is an electrified railway double line which connects Chennai and Bengaluru, the two largest cities in South India. It is officially known as Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station–Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna line, and earlier known as Madras–Bangalore line.

The Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur main line connects Chennai Egmore and Thanjavur Junction both in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. South Coast Railway Zone (SCoR) has been announced as the newest railway zone of the Indian Railways and is headquartered at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The formal notification for operationalization of this Zone is yet to be issued.

The Mahabubnagar-Munirabad section is an under construction railway section project of the Indian Railways. The section falls under the administration of Guntakal of South Central Railway zone and Hubli Railway Division of South Western Railway Zone. This serves as the shortest route to Hyderabad-Hubballi and Hyderabad-Goa routes.
