Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing is a public funded institute administratively governed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. [1] It is a constituent college of University of Delhi. [2] The college ranked second in India for Nursing Education (2016). [3]

History

The history of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing can be traced back to the School of Nursing Administration founded in 1943.

As a temporary campus, the college was allotted the vacated American Army Barracks and its Ccensor's block at, Jaswant Singh Road, and FEB Hostel at Curzon Road New Delhi walkable distance from India Gate. [4] College of Nursing, New Delhi since its inception is a constituent college of University of Delhi. In 1971, the President of India Shri. V.V. Giri laid the foundation stone for a new college campus consisting of Teaching & Administrative block, UG & PG hostels, Residential quarters/family accommodation for teachers, non-teaching staff and a playground. In July 1973 the college shifted to its permanent campus at Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi.[ citation needed ]

Etymology

The School of Nursing Administration amalgamated into the College of Nursing in 1946. In 1973, College of Nursing New Delhi was renamed as ‘Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing’ after Rajkumari Amrit Kaur independent India's first Health Minister who was instrumental in the development of the college as well as the nursing profession in India.[ citation needed ]

Campus

The campus is located in South Delhi, Lajpat Nagar, adjacent to Moolchand metro station and Central School, Andrewsganj, New Delhi.

Academics

The college offers Undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing.

Apart from the regular academic programs, the college also serves as a study center for Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). [9] The college is also designated as regional center for Ph.D. in Nursing program of Indian Nursing Council, a World Health Organization (WHO) supported initiative. [3]

Rajkumari Dame Bibiji Amrit Kaur DStJ was an Indian activist and politician. Following her long-lasting association with the Indian independence movement, she was appointed the first Health Minister of India in 1947 and remained in office until 1957. She also held the charge of Sports Minister and Urban Development Minister and was instrumental in setting up the National Institute of Sports, Patiala. During her tenure, Kaur ushered in several healthcare reforms in India and is widely remembered for her contributions to the sector and her advocacy of women's rights. Kaur was also a member of the Constituent Assembly of India, the body that framed the Constitution of India.

Lajpat Nagar is an interchange station between Violet Line and Pink Line of the Delhi Metro in Delhi. It is located between Jangpura and Moolchand on the Violet Line in Lajpat Nagar. The station was opened with the first section of the Violet Line on 3 October 2010, in time for the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on the same day. It became an interchange station with the opening of the Pink Line on 6 August 2018. The station on the Pink Line is underground, whereas the Violet line station is elevated. Harbhajan Singh Rissam (1951–2013) was an Indian interventional cardiologist, philanthropist and writer, known for his medical service and his novel based on medical profession. He was the director of cardiac clinical services at Max Healthcare, Delhi and his maiden novel, The Scalpel - Game Beneath, the first book of a proposed trilogy published in 2010, is a medical thriller on the medicine mafia. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to medical science.

Community Radio JIMS Vasant Kunj 90.4 MHz was set up in 2005 to provide a platform to voice the issues of the community living in and around the Vasant Kunj area, apart from the faculty, staff, and students of the college. It is managed by the Jagannath Gupta Memorial Education Society and is run by Jagannath International Management School, Vasant Kunj, an affiliated institute of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi, India. The station is empanelled with Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP). CR JIMS VasantKunj was selected by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting among the country's 24 Lead Operational Community Radio stations. Community Radio JIMS Vasant Kunj is a campus radio but there is active involvement of community in producing the content. Being an educational institution radio, it is producing content for the local community, of the local community and by the local community.

Edith Buchanan was a Canadian nurse who devoted her professional career to the development of nursing education in India. She is considered a pioneer who laid the foundation for nursing research and doctoral education in the field of nursing in India.
