Acharya Narendra Dev College is a constituent college of University of Delhi situated in Govindpuri (Kalkaji), Delhi, India. Established in 1991, [1] Acharya operates under the aegis of, and is fully funded by, the Government of Delhi. [2] It is named after the great educationist and reformist of modern India, Acharya Narendra Dev.

Contents

The college is very accessible via public transport. Govindpuri metro station of violet line is around 1 km from the college. [3]

It is ranked 18th among colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2020. [4]

Courses offered

It is the first college of the university to introduce the B.Sc. Honours Biomedical Sciences in 1999. Students can enroll for the postgraduate degree of University of Delhi in Chemistry and Mathematics.

Acharya Narendra Dev College offers part-time certificate and diploma courses in foreign languages:

Besides, the add-on courses ELPC (English Language Proficiency Course) and ECPDT (Effective Communication and Personality Development through Theatre) enrich the students' language, personality and provide learning opportunities.

Culture and projects

Acharya Narendra Dev College along with Wikimedia India and Centre for Internet and Society have been recognized as Affiliates of Creative Commons in India. On 12 November 2013, Creative Commons India was relaunched in New Delhi by the Union Minister for Human Resources Development Dr Shashi Tharoor.

The college believes in promoting open-source software and open education resources. It is the first college in the University of Delhi to migrate to Linux. Having 80 computers in the Web Center and all the computer labs run on Linux OS. Use of proprietary software is kept minimal and only when required by the course material.

Former principal, Savithri Singh, is an elected member of the International Community Council of the Wikieducator and its Vice Chair.

Acharya Narendra Dev College promotes research by students and faculty. One of these research projects is the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell. [6] The cell also coordinates six projects aimed at promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. To promote research by students the college offers ELITE (Education in a Lively Innovative Training Environment) scholarships to 200 students for summer training and projects.

The Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), [7] an international society advancing an interdisciplinary approach to the science and application of light, has formally approved "University of Delhi at Acharya Narendra Dev College SPIE Student Chapter." [8] The college SPIE chapter [9] is highly prominent on the International scale and gets annual funding for members to attend International conferences most notably SPIE Optics+Photonics in San Diego, USA and SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco, USA.

Acharya Narendra Dev college also offers extra-curricular activities for students. Student-run societies include ones on gender sensitization, dramatics, debate, electronics, adventure, sports, social outreach, think lab, and others.

SPIE also participates as partners in leading educational initiatives, and in 2020, for example, provided more than $5.8 million in support of optics education and outreach programs around the world.

Anthony Michael Johnson is an American experimental physicist, a professor of physics, and a professor of computer science and electrical engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He is the Director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Photonics Research (CASPR), also situated on campus at UMBC. Since his election to the 2002 term as president of the Optical Society, formerly the Optical Society of America, Johnson has the distinction of being the first and only African-American president to date. Johnson's research interests include the ultrafast photophysics and nonlinear optical properties of bulk, nanostructured, and quantum well semiconductor structures, ultrashort pulse propagation in fibers and high-speed lightwave systems. His research has helped to better understand processes that occur in ultrafast time frames of 1 quadrillionth of a second. Ultrashort pulses of light have been used to address technical and logistical challenges in medicine, telecommunications, homeland security, and have many other applications that enhance contemporary life.

Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW), is an all women's university located in New Delhi, India on the heritage campus at Kashmere Gate, Delhi. It was founded as the Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology in 1998. In May 2013 it gained autonomy and became the first women's technical university in India established by Govt. of Delhi. James Clair Wyant is professor at the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona where he was Director (1999–2005) and Dean (2005–2012). He received a B.S. in physics from Case Western Reserve University and M.S. and Ph.D. in optics from the University of Rochester.

SR University Sri Rajeshwara Educational Society is one of the first private universities near to Hyderabad in Telangana state in 2020. SR Engineering College is now SR University.

Anurag Sharma is an Indian physicist and a professor at the department of physics of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He is known for his pioneering researches on optoelectronics and optical communications and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences, India as well as Indian National Academy of Engineering.
