Raymond Akongburo Atuguba is a Ghanaian lawyer and academic. He has been professor of general jurisprudence and dean of the University of Ghana School of Law since 2019,where he has been a faculty member since 2002. [1] [2] He served as a Visiting Professor of Law and the Henry J. Steiner Visiting Professor of Human Rights at Harvard Law School from 2018 to 2019. In Spring 2024,he held the position of Bok Visiting International Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. [3]
Atuguba was born in rural Ghana. He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Ghana,graduating with First Class Honours in Law (LLB) in 1997. In 1999,he obtained certification as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana from the Ghana School of Law,earning Best Student awards in Civil Procedure,Family Law,and Commercial (Insurance) Law. [3] He furthered his education at Harvard Law School,earning a Master of Laws (LLM) in 2000 and a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) with distinction in 2004. Additionally,he earned an Executive Master's in Business Administration (EMBA) from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in 2014. [3]
Atuguba has held various visiting and permanent positions at academic institutions and continues to contribute his expertise to the law and development field. He has shared his knowledge and insights at several universities across Africa,Europe,North America,Canada,and Australia.
Atuguba has over 100 publications,engaged in over 100 research and advocacy projects,and produced over 100 research and technical reports. [4] [5] He has delivered over 500 papers and presentations across all continents since the beginning of century. [1] [6] He has audited,reviewed,and drafted over 500 constitutions,policies,main legislation,strategies,regulations,guidelines,manuals,and procedures,primarily in African countries and worldwide. [5] [7] His research focuses on Policy,Law and Development in the Global South,Constitutional and Administrative Law in Africa,and Transnational Perspectives on Human Rights and Community Lawyering. [5]
Atuguba's professional experience includes roles in the public sector,such as Executive Secretary to the Constitution Review Commission of Ghana,and Executive Secretary to the President of Ghana. [2] [5] [8] In the private sector,Atuguba is the founder and former Team Leader of Law and Development Associates (LADA),and he currently serves as the Managing Partner of Atuguba and Associates,a law firm that specializes in legal services. [3] In the non-profit sector,he is the co-founder,former Executive Director,and former Board Chair of the Legal Resources Centre. Additionally,he serves as the Board Chair of the LADA Institute. He has consulted for many African governments,including those of The Gambia,Ghana,Guinea Bissau,Lesotho,Liberia,Sierra Leone,Uganda,and Zimbabwe. [1] His consultancy work extends to major international development agencies and NGOs such as the United Nations (UN),United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-OHCR),UNICEF,UNHCR,United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC),United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL),Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),The World Bank,International Labour Organization (ILO),International Organization for Migration (IOM),European Union (EU),African Union (AU),Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS),USAID,UK-AID (DFID),German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ),Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA),Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES),Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAF),International Council on Human Rights Policy (ICHRP),Oxfam,IBIS,International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED),ActionAid International,Human Rights Watch,Human Rights First,CARE International,Plan International,Ford Foundation,Open Society Institute (OSI),and Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA). Atuguba has also designed and led or co-led over 100 training programs and workshops and has chaired or participated in over 100 boards and committees at both national and international levels. [3] From 1998 to 2008,he was projects director,then associate executive director,then executive director,then board chair of the Legal Resources Centre,Ghana. [2]
Atuguba has participated in the University of Ghana School of Law Projects Office [12] and the Democratic Vigilance Project (DVP),a partnership between GIZ and the University of Ghana School of Law. [13]

Akua Kuenyehia is a Ghanaian academic and lawyer who served as judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) from 2003 to 2015. She also served as First Vice-president of the Court. She was one of the three female African judges at the ICC.
Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is a Ghanaian academic and politician who served as Minister for Education from February 2013 to January 2017. She is a full professor of literature. She served as the first female Vice-Chancellor of a state university in Ghana when she took over as Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Coast. Ernest Aryeetey,is an Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Statistical,Social and Economic Research (ISSER) at the University of Ghana. Until 31st July 2024,he was the secretary-general of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). He was also previously vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana (2010-2016). Prior to his appointment as vice-chancellor,he was a senior fellow and director of the Africa Growth Initiative at the Brookings Institution,Washington,D.C. He had also been director of ISSER at the University of Ghana for the period February 2003 to January 2010.

Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is a Ghanaian entomologist and university administrator who served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 1 August 2016 to 31 July 2021. In this role,he was the principal academic and administrative officer of the university. Owusu is a professor of entomology at the Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science and prior to his appointment as vice-chancellor,he was the provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at the University of Ghana. He is the current President of the Presbyterian University College.
Elsie Akosua Biraa Effah Kaufmann is a Ghanaian academic,academic administrator,biomedical engineer,and current host of the National Science and Maths Quiz. In December 2020,Elsie Kaufmann was appointed an associate professor at the University of Ghana,and was appointed the Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences on 1 August 2022.

Frederick Torgbor Sai, was a Ghanaian academic and family health physician who co-founded the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana in 1967. A gender and reproductive health advocate,he was known for his campaigns and education drawing attention to the food and nutrition problems of Africa,particularly of women and children. He served as the Chief Physician for Nutrition and the Director of Medical Services at the Ghana Health Service and Professor of Community Health at the University of Ghana,Legon. He was also a nutrition advisor to the Food and Agriculture Organisation,Africa Region as well as the coordinator for the World Hunger Programme of the United Nations University and a Senior Population Advisor to the World Bank. He was the President and Honorary Secretary of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. In professional circles,he was known as the “Godfather or Father of Family Planning”and sometimes as the “Grandfather of Maternal Health”.
