Rebelline (foaled 29 April 1998) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She won six of her eleven races in a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until May 2002. As a juvenile she won on her debut and then finished second to Vinnie Roe in the Eyrefield Stakes. In the following year she won the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial and the Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing third in the Prix de l'Opéra. She reached her peak as a four-year-old in 2002 when she was undefeated in three starts, taking the Gladness Stakes, Mooresbridge Stakes and Tattersalls Gold Cup. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a dam of winners.

Background

Rebelline is a bay mare with no white markings bred in Ireland by Peter Tellwright of the British-based Tyrley Castle Stud. As a foal in December 1999 the filly was offered for sale at Tattersalls and was sold for 28,000 guineas. [2] She returned to the sales ring as a yearling at Goffs in October 1999 and was bought for IR£68,000 by Lady O'Reilly's Castlemartin Stud. [3] She was sent into training with Kevin Prendergast and was ridden in all of her races by Declan McDonogh.

She was sired by Robellino, a son of Roberto who won the Royal Lodge Stakes and sired several other good winners including Mister Baileys and Royal Rebel. [4] Rebelline's dam Fleeting Rainbow showed little racing ability, failing to win in three races, [5] but did better a broodmare, producing several other winners including the Blandford Stakes winner Quws. She was descended from the British broodmare Pelting (foaled 1958) who was the ancestor of several other major winners including Moon Ballad, Bassenthwaite, Braashee (Prix Royal-Oak) and Central Park (Italian Derby). [6]

Racing career

2000: two-year-old season

Rebelline made her first appearance in a maiden race over one mile at Navan Racecourse on 18 October. Starting at odds of 7/1 in an eighteen-runner field she took the lead inside the final furlong and won by three quarters of a length from the Aidan O'Brien-trained Karsavina. [7] The filly was then stepped up in class for the Listed Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown Racecourse on 12 November and finished second of the twenty runners, beaten one and a half lengths by the Dermot Weld-trained colt Vinnie Roe.

2001: three-year-old season

On her first appearance as a three-year-old Rebelline contested the 1,000 Guineas Trial over seven furlongs at Leopardstown on 16 April and started 7/2 second favourite behind the highly rated Imagine. After tracking the leaders she went to the front a furlong and a half from the finish, accelerated away from the field and won "easily" by five and a half lengths from the favourite. [8] On 27 May at the Curragh the filly was moved up to Group 1 class and started at odds of 8/1 in a sixteen-runner field for the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She stayed on in the straight without ever looking likely to win and finished fifth behind Imagine, Crystal Music, Toroca and Sequoyah.

Five weeks after her defeat in the Guineas, Rebelline returned to the Curragh and was moved up in distance for the Group 2 Pretty Polly Stakes over ten furlongs. She was the subject of a "massive gamble" [9] in the betting market, being backed down from 9/2 to 2/1 favourite. She raced in second behind the British challenger Heavenly Whisper before going to the front approaching the final furlong and kept on well to win by two lengths from the four-year-old Molomo. [10] After the race Prendergast said "I thought she would win because she was working so well". [9]

The filly started 11/2 third choice in the betting for the Irish Oaks over one and a half miles at the Curragh in July, but never threatened the leaders and finished seventh of the twelve runners, six lengths behind the winner Lailani.

Rebelline was off the course for more than two and a half months before returning in October when she was sent to France to contest the Group 1 Prix de l'Opéra over 2000 metres at Longchamp Racecourse. She finished strongly and took third place, beaten one and a half lengths and two lengths by Terre A Terre and Mot Juste. Two weeks later she started a 16/1 outsider for the Champion Stakes at Newmarket and came home eighth of the twelve runners behind Nayef.

2002: four-year-old season

On her four-year-old debut Rebelline was assigned a weight of 136 pounds for the Group 3 Gladness Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh on 7 April. She started second choice in the betting behind Johannesburg a three-year-old colt who had won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November 2001 and been named champion juvenile in both Europe and the United States. Johannesburg took the lead in the final furlong but Rebelline, after briefly looking unlikely to get a clear run, came from well off the pace to catch the colt in the final strides and win by a short head. [11] Kevin Prendergast commented "Rebelline always goes well fresh and I thought Johannesburg looked ring-rusty before the race. She had a back problem 10 weeks ago but she would have been an unlucky loser had she not got out in time". [12]

Rebelline was then sent to France for the Prix Ganay but was withdrawn from the race when she was found to be in season. [13] On 6 May Rebelline was stepped back up in distance for the Mooresbridge Stakes over ten furlongs at the Curragh, in which she was matched against the St Leger winner Milan. Starting the 5/2 second favourite her task was made considerably easier when Milan was pulled up injured before the straight. She overhauled the front-running Shoal Creek a furlong from the finish and won by three quarters of a length. [14]

The Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on 26 May attracted a field of eight runners and saw Nayef start favourite ahead of Tobougg with Rebelline next in the betting on 7/1 alongside Bach (Royal Whip Stakes). The other four runners were Indian Creek (Earl of Sefton Stakes), Chancellor (Gordon Richards Stakes), Diamond Trim (Finale Stakes) and Chimes At Midnight (Curragh Cup). Bach set the pace with Rebelline settled behind the leaders before turning into the straight in fifth place. After struggling to obtain a clear run, McDonogh switched the filly to the inside and began to make rapid progress in the last quarter mile. Rebelline gained the advantage 75 yards from the finish and broke clear to win by two lengths from Bach with Nayef two and a half lengths back in third. [15] After the race Prendergast described the mare as "a giant-killer". [16] He also explained that Rebelline had suffered from arthritis throughout her racing career and that her fitness had to be maintained by regular swimming sessions rather that conventional training gallops. [17]

Despite hopes that she would return for an autumn campaign, Rebelline never raced again and was retired from racing at the end of the season.

Breeding record

At the end of her racing career, Rebelline was retired to become a broodmare for her owner's Castlemartin Stud. She produced at least ten foals and six winners:

Imagine was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1000 Guineas and The Oaks in 2001. In a racing career which lasted from August 2000 to June 2001 the filly ran ten times and won four races. As a two-year-old, Imagine ran six times, winning the Group Three C. L. Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh and finishing second in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket. The following spring, the filly was beaten in her first two races before winning the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh. Imagine recorded her most valuable success on her final appearance, winning the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. She never raced again, but proved to be a successful broodmare.

Lady Carla British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Lady Carla was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning The Oaks in 1996. In a racing career which lasted from October 1995 to July 1997 the filly ran six times and won three races. After winning her only race as a two-year-old, Lady Carla won the Listed Oaks Trial Stakes at Lingfield Park on her three-year-old debut. Four weeks later she maintained her unbeaten run in the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom, winning by nine lengths. She was beaten when favourite for the Irish Oaks and finished unplaced in two races the following season before being retired to stud.

Blue Wind Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Blue Wind was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the classic Oaks Stakes in 1981. She showed promising form as a two-year-old in 1980 when she won two of her five races including the Silken Glider Stakes. In the following year she finished second in the Irish 1000 Guineas and then showed her best form when moved up in distance, winning the Oaks by seven lengths and following up in the Irish Oaks a month later. In 1982 she was campaigned in the United States without success. She made no impact as a broodmare.

Tarascon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1997 she was one of the leading fillies of her generation in Ireland winning two of her four races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following season she became rather temperamental and ran poorly in the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks Stakes, but produced her best form to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She retired after winning three of her nine races and had some success as a broodmare.

Saoirse Abu was an American-bred Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading European two-year-old fillies of her generation, winning three of her eight races including two of Ireland's most important races for juveniles: the Phoenix Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She raced three times as a three-year-old in 2008, producing her best effort when a close third in the 1000 Guineas. She was sold for over £2 million at the end of her racing career and became a broodmare in the ownership of Sheikh Mohammed.

Lillie Langtry (horse) Irish Thoroughbred racehorse

Lillie Langtry is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred at a small stud in County Cork she was sold as a yearling and raced for the Coolmore organisation. As a two-year-old, she was one of the best juvenile fillies in Ireland winning three of her seven races including the Fillies' Sprint Stakes, Debutante Stakes and Tattersalls Timeform Fillies' 800 as well as finishing third in both the Albany Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She was injured when finishing unplaced in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. In 2010 she recorded her biggest wins when recording Group One victories in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown. She was retired at the end of the year with a record of five wins from eleven races.

Sunspangled was an Irish thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 1998 until September 1999, she won twice and finished second twice in ten starts. As a two-year-old, she won on her debut but was beaten in her next two races before recording her most important victory in the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse. In the following year, she was campaigned exclusively in Group One events and failed to win, although she did finish second in the Irish Oaks. She has made little impact as a broodmare.

Nicer was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed promise as a two-year-old in 1992 although she won only one minor race from five attempts. She reached her peak in the following spring when she won the Masaka Stakes before recording her biggest victory in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was beaten in her next four races and was then exported to the United States where she failed to win. She was retired to become a broodmare but her foals made very little impact on the racecourse.

Classic Park was a British-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After winning on her racecourse debut she was beaten in her other seven races as a two-year-old although she was placed in the Marble Hill Stakes, Silver Flash Stakes and Round Tower Stakes. In the following spring she won the Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial before recording her biggest success when taking the Irish 1,000 Guineas as a 20/1 outsider. She thus became the first Classic race winner trained by Aidan O'Brien. Classic Park did not win again despite running well in important races over one mile and was retired at the end of the year. As a broodmare she was best known as the dam of Walk In The Park who finished second in The Derby and became a successful National Hunt sire.

Saoire is a Welsh-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1000 Guineas in 2005. After being sold cheaply as a foal she was eventually sent into training with Frances Crowley in Ireland. After finishing unplaced in her only race as a juvenile she won a maiden race on her debut as a three-year-old and then recorded an emphatic six-length victory in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She failed to reproduce her form in two subsequent races and was retired in 2007. Since her retirement from racing she has had some success as a broodmare.

Bethrah is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1000 Guineas in 2010. After finishing unplaced on her only run as a two-year-old she reached her peak in the following spring, winning a maiden race and the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial before taking the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was well beaten in her only subsequent race and was retired at the end of the year.

Arctique Royale was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Ebadiyla was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred and owned by the Aga Khan an trained by John Oxx she was unraced as a two-year-old in 1996 but quickly established herself as a very promising filly in the following spring with an emphatic win on her racecourse debut followed by a narrow defeat in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. After finishing sixth in The Oaks she won the Irish Oaks and ended her season with a six length win in the Prix Royal-Oak. She remained in training as a four-year-old but failed to win in three races although she did finish third in a strong renewal of the Coronation Cup. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a dam of winners.

Margarula is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In her first eleven races she showed herself to be a tough and consistent stayer, winning three handicap races, but appeared to be some way below top class. On her twelfth start however, she produced a major upset when she defeated a field of highly regarded fillies to win the Irish Oaks at odds of 33/1. Margarula finished sixth in her two subsequent races and was retired at the end of the season. She had some success as a broodmare, producing the Sydney Cup winner Grand Marshal.

Dance Design is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She competed in five different countries and won seven times from nineteen starts in a track career which lasted from August 1995 to November 1998.

Termagant is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Ireland, winning both of her races including the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. She failed to win again and ran only four more times over the next two years before being retired from racing.

Miss Beatrix is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2006 she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Ireland when she won three of eight races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Goffs Million as well as finishing third in the Phoenix Stakes. She ran unplaced in the 1000 Guineas in the following spring and was retired from racing later that year.

Chelsea Rose is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a track career which lasted from June 2004 until September 2006 she raced in four different countries and won five races over distances ranging from six furlongs to one and a half miles. She showed very promising form as a juvenile in 2004 when she won two of her three races including the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year she failed in the Irish Oaks, her principal objective but recorded victories in the Silver Stakes, Ballyroan Stakes and Dance Design Stakes. As a four-year-old in 2006 she failed to win a race but finished second in the Glencairn Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes and Royal Whip Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.

Definite Article was a British-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old in 1994 he won a maiden race on his debut and then won the Group 1 National Stakes on his second and final start of the year. In the following year he won the Silver Stakes and was narrowly beaten in a strongly contested edition of the Irish Derby. As a four-year-old he added victories in the Mooresbridge Stakes and the Tattersalls Gold Cup. After being retired from racing at the end of the 1996 he became a successful breeding stallion, enjoying particular success as a sire of National Hunt horses.
