Pyhäjärvi is a town and municipality in the south of Northern Ostrobothnia region, Finland. Pyhäjärvi also borders the Northern Savonia and Central Finland regions. The town belongs to the subregion of Nivala–Haapajärvi. Its seat is in Pyhäsalmi.
Kajaani, historically known as Cajanaburg, is a town in Finland and the regional capital of Kainuu. Kajaani is located southeast of Lake Oulu, which drains into the Gulf of Bothnia through the Oulu River. The population of Kajaani is approximately 37,000, while the sub-region has a population of approximately 51,000. It is the 31st most populous municipality in Finland.
Ylivieska is a town and municipality of Northern Ostrobothnia region, Finland. It has a population of 15,369, and it serves as the administrative centre for Kalajokilaakso and Pyhäjokilaakso, an area with a population of about 90,000 inhabitants. Ylivieska is also the commercial center of the Oulu South region, the southern part of the late Oulu province.

Kärsämäki is a significant road junction where Highway 4 (Helsinki–Oulu–Utsjoki) and Highway 28 (Kokkola–Kajaani) intersect and where Highway 58 leading to Kangasala begins. The distance to the regional capital Oulu is 123 kilometres (76 mi).

Kalajokilaakso stands for the "basin of Kalajoki river", located in Ostrobothnia, Finland. At the mouth of the river, lies the town of Kalajoki. The Kalajoki river runs to the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea.
Oulujärvi or Lake Oulu or Ule, is a large lake in the Kainuu region of Finland. It is also historically known as Lake Cajania from a former name of Kainuu. With an area of 928 square kilometres (358 sq mi) it is the fifth largest lake in the country. The lake is drained by the Oulu River, which flows northwestward from the lake into the Gulf of Bothnia. Its nickname is the "Kainuu Sea", and it is bordered by the three municipalities of Vaala, Paltamo, and Kajaani. About 40 percent of the lake is in Vaala.

The Finnish national road 22 is the main route between the major cities of Oulu and Kajaani in northern Finland. The road is 185 kilometres (115 mi) long, and it is part of the national transport route network that connects two regions, North Ostrobothnia and Kainuu. At the Oulu end, the road connects to Highway 4 (E8/E75), while at the Kajaani end, it connects to Highway 5 (E63).
