Renegade Nell (formerly The Ballad of Renegade Nell) is a British historical fantasy action adventure television series written by Sally Wainwright. Produced by The Lookout Point for Disney+, the series premiered on 29 March 2024. [2]

Synopsis

Nell Jackson finds herself framed for murder and becomes a highwaywoman in 18th century England, [3] becoming the most feared highwaywoman in the country. With the help of a magical sprite called Billy Blind, Nell realizes her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined. [4]

The story starts with Isambard Tulley and his gang robbing a carriage in the middle of a forest. Nelly Jackson happens upon this scene and is about to be held up by Tulley when a mysterious orb enters through Jackson's nose, giving her super human strength. Jackson fights off the gang and leaves them beat and the hostages free. The orb leaves her. After many years of absence, Nelly returns to her hometown which is overseen by Lord Blancheford and his cruel son, Thomas Blancheford. There, she reunites with her father, Sam Trotter, and her two little sisters, Roxy and George. Nelly reveals that she has recently become widowed and asks to stay at the family tavern for a few days. At first her father begrudgingly agrees, but after his anger subsides, he welcomes her with open arms and a party. Thomas Blancheford crashes the happy gathering and demands to see Roxy, whom he has harassing. Nelly tells Thomas to leave Roxy alone and a fight ensues between the two. Just as Nelly is about to be drowned, the mysterous orb enters again into Nelly through her mouth and she fights Thomas, making a him a fool. He and his friends run off and the orb leaves Nelly, turning her back to her normal self. That night, Nelly is woken up by Billy Blind, the fairy that gives her, her super human strength. He tells her that he is sworn to protect her in moments of danger, but for a reason that unbeknown to him. The next day, Thomas seeks out the help of Robert Hennessy, the Earl of Poynton since he knows that Poynton dabbles in the dark arts. In order get help from Pynton, he needs ot prove himself to gain his father's inheritance and to settle his accruing debts. Back in the village, Nelly grows bored of the quiet life and decides to leave her family to join the Queen's Shilling. The night that she leaves, Thomas kidnaps Nelly's father and kills him in cold blood. Lord Blancheford finds out this information and tells Thomas and his friends that no one must find out about the murder. Rasseles, the Blancheford footman, goes to tell the Jackson girls about the murder and they go to find Nelly in the city. In the city, Nelly is rejected by the army and encounters Charles Devereux, the man that takes the name of Isambard Tulley to rob carriages.

Production

In April 2021 it was revealed that Disney+ had acquired the series from British screenwriter Sally Wainwright. Ben Taylor, Amanda Brotchie and MJ Delaney are directing episodes. Faith Penhale, Will Johnston, Louise Mutter and Johanna Deveraux are executive producers. Jon Jennings is series producer and Stella Merz producer. [6] [2]

In a Radio Times interview following the series' premiere, director Ben Taylor said a second season was being written and would likely involve a time jump; Disney+ had yet to confirm whether there would indeed be a second season at the time of the interview's publication. [7]

Casting

In August 2022 Louisa Harland, Nick Mohammed, Joely Richardson, and Adrian Lester were announced as being among the cast for the series. [8]

Filming

Principal photography was reported to have started with a nine-month schedule for the planned eight episodes. [9] [10] Joely Richardson was pictured in costume at Oxford's Bodleian Library in October 2022. [11] Other filming locations included Hampton Court Palace, Bourne Wood in Farnham, [12] Rousham House in Oxfordshire, Broughton Castle (the Blancheford's manor house) also in Oxfordshire, and the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. [13]

Renegade Nell streamed on Disney+ from 29 March 2024. [14]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes , 86% of 28 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.7/10.The website's consensus reads: "Renegade Nell has a hero worth rooting for in Louisa Harland, and even if it curiously blurs the line between family-friendly and edgy, it makes a spunky first impression." [15] On Metacritic, the series holds a weighted average score of 69 out of 100, based on 12 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [16] Anita Singh in The Daily Telegraph said "Harland carries the whole series and is sensational." [17] Lucy Mangan in The Guardian gave the show four stars and described Harland as "being brilliant". It premiered on the Disney+ Star platform internationally, Star+ in Latin America and Hulu in the United States, on 25 January 2023. It received generally positive reviews, and was renewed for a second season on 23 January 2023, ahead of the series premiere. Season 2 became available to stream 6 March 2024 on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in other markets.
