Rhynchomesostoma rostratum is a species of rhabdocoel flatworms in the family Typhloplanidae. [1]
The animal is 1.5 to 3.5 mm long [2] and transparent. The anterior end is retractable. [3]
It was described by Otto Friedrich Müller in 1774 as Fasciola rostrata. [1] [4]
The species has been recorded in Europe, India, Kenya, Siberia, and the US. [1]
It preys on oligochaetes, cladocerans, copepods, other microturbellarians, and mosquito larvae and other aquatic insects. It is preyed upon by the flatworm Phaenocora unipunctata . [2]
The flatworms, flat worms, Platyhelminthes, or platyhelminths are a phylum of relatively simple bilaterian, unsegmented, soft-bodied invertebrates. Unlike other bilaterians, they are acoelomates, and have no specialised circulatory and respiratory organs, which restricts them to having flattened shapes that allow oxygen and nutrients to pass through their bodies by diffusion. The digestive cavity has only one opening for both ingestion and egestion ; as a result, the food cannot be processed continuously.
Otto Friedrich Müller, also known as Otto Friedrich Mueller was a Danish naturalist and scientific illustrator.
A land snail is any of the numerous species of snail that live on land, as opposed to the sea snails and freshwater snails. Land snail is the common name for terrestrial gastropod mollusks that have shells. However, it is not always easy to say which species are terrestrial, because some are more or less amphibious between land and fresh water, and others are relatively amphibious between land and salt water.
Valvata cristata is a species of minute freshwater snail with an operculum, an aquatic gastropod mollusk or micromollusk in the family Valvatidae, the valve snails.
Geoplanidae is a family of flatworms known commonly as land planarians or land flatworms.
Macrostomidae is a family of small basal free-living flatworms, and are found in marine, brackish, and freshwater environments. There are currently about 180 named species in this family.
Catenulida is an order of flatworms in the classical classification, or a class of flatworms in a phylogenetic approach. They are relatively small free-living flatworms, inhabiting freshwater and marine environments. There are about 100 species described worldwide, but the simple anatomy makes species distinction problematic.
Rhabdocoela is an order of flatworms in the class Rhabditophora with about 1700 species described worldwide. The order was first described in 1831 by Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg. Most of rhabdocoels are free-living organisms, but some live symbiotically with other animals.
Microplana terrestris is a species of free-living, terrestrial flatworm in the order Tricladida. It was first described in 1773 by the Danish naturalist Otto Friedrich Müller as Fasciola terrestris, but has since been reassigned to the genus Microplana.
Mesostoma ehrenbergii is a species of rhabdocoel flatworms in the family Typhloplanidae.
Gyratrix hermaphroditus is a species of rhabdocoel flatworm in the family Polycystididae.
Opistomum pallidum is a species of rhabdocoel flatworm in the family Typhloplanidae.
Rhynchomesostoma is a genus of rhabdocoel flatworms in the family Typhloplanidae.
Dalyellia viridis is a species of rhabdocoel flatworm in the family Dalyelliidae.
